Just wondering... In your opinion, who among the actual contenders (Perry, Cain, Newt, Huntsman, etc.) or potential contenders (Christie, Jeb, etc.) for the GOP nomination would have been doing better than Mitt in the polls?

Jeb, for sure. I wonder if they felt the path would be more clear next election year, or that he wanted to wait for someone else to handle the next 4 years of disaster.... who knows.

Ironically, misguided as his primary campaign strategy was, I kind of feel like Huntsman would stand the best chance. This is more a gut feeling than anything, but he'd have a huge base that would vote for anyone but Obama anyway, so I get the sense that some of the things that hurt him in the primaries might have helped him with independent voters and disillusioned democrats. And he seems like a decent enough guy with a brain.

At first glance, I thought the same thing about Huntsman. What changed my mind was further reading of his budget plan. Paul Ryan has enough trouble getting his plan to gain traction in swing states. Huntsmans fiscal policy would have even more trouble.

You might be right. All the talk about evolution and climate change sort of masked the fact that Huntsman might have been the most radical fiscal conservative of any of the candidates (partly why I thought it was stupid of his campaign to paint him as a moderate in the primaries).

That said, I still think he could do better than Romney. Though the popular vote will be close, as long as the voter registration nonsense doesn't cause something screwy to happen in PA, I think there's a real possibility that the Electoral College could be a rout.

John Huntsman would bring in MUCH more independents. Maybe even dems not happy with obama. he has common sense, intelligent, is reasonable and thoughtful in his views. I really like the guy

Next maybe ron paul, very likeable, a bit extreme for many fiscally.

both better than romney for me.

Romney is a guy who made a career of cutting the fat. he would take companies, cut out employees, outsource jobs nad make it efficient. He'd be great to run a business and bring in profit, but taking this country and fixing it...no.

You're asking if one of the other contenders could have beaten Obama worse than what Mitt is going to beat him by. ;)

I think Mitt is the best choice -- great business background, credibility on the economy, bi-partisan governor, saved the Olympics, great moral code, and just a good and decent man... but perhaps more importantly politically, he has an incredible ability to raise money and create a campaign organization. No other Republican candidate can match up with his fundraising and organization, at least this time around.

There is actually a great schism in the Republican party where the money issue leadership that controls the party must use social issues to rope in voters who would actually be marginalized by their economic policies. Also, it rings hollow to proclaim a love of freedom when your platform seeks to dictate legal moral and social choices.

Any nominee would be hampered by their confused hypocritical party message.

Huntsman would have beat Obama but the Republican party is too radical for him.

With even longtime Republicans criticizing the campaign and message of the Romney organization, this is a pretty damning indictment of the party as a whole.

Jeb Bush could do better. However, he might have to try to wait longer to rinse the stain of his brother the stupidest president in maybe a hundred of years.

As an independent, I would have considered Huntsman. I liked Romney at first until he started pandering. He is also out of touch with the average person.

I know a Lot of people who will vote for Obama..but would have voted for Ron Paul if he had the nomination. I also know a lot of Republicans that will not vote for Romney, but will write in Ron Paul or another candidate. Most of the polls earlier this year pitted Obama vs. Paul and Obama vs. Romney. The results? Paul would have defeated Obama. Obama will defeat Romney. I've got friends who were delegates this year and even they believe the Republican party is starting to split.

I personally would of actually listened and given my due dillegence to Huntsman.

Romney is just a joke though.

Romney can raise money like no other, but his campaign organization is garbage. This calls into question his ability to put an administration together.

If Jeb Bush weren't so stained by W, he would probably beat Obama. Maybe Mitch Daniels. Any of the Freak Show candidates would be a bigger joke than Romney already is.
