Lived and grew up in one of the small towns outside of Victoria (10mi-15mi away). Victoria was the "big city" for me. Seems like everyone here has already described it pretty well though.
I live in Victoria, 62,000 population. And alot of times when I go somewhere, i see people I know. Mumfords is the best bbq in town, the hike and bike trail is 2 miles long, people drive slow, and any other questions, just ask me.
I'm pretty laid back, but I think Victoria would be an OK place to live for a couple of years. Spend the week chilling, living the small-town life, eat good BBQ, DVR to pass the evenings. You're under 2 hours away from Houston, San Antonio and Corpus. See a ballgame, hit the beach, go to Sea World, during the weekends and take advantage of a less hectic pace during the week.
Just don't go to country bars on the weekends unless you wanna get stomped by the "texas rattlesnake"
It really is not a bad little town. The hunting and fishing are good, the people are nice and the cost of living is low. You should be safe and not have a hard time finding good, clean housing.
I am a big fan of Hispanic women, so I am definitely curious about the amount of talent down there and in the Corpus region.
My family lives lives in Yoakum. Visiting Victoria was the highlight of the weekend. Go to Halletsville for kolaches. Enjoy quick road trips to San Antonio/Austin/Rockport/Corpus. Friendly people. No Washington Ave. to speak of, but there's things to do. It is a town for older folks/very mature folks I think. You will do well to learn and do as much work as you can because Victoria isn't that big of a distraction of things to do.
If you are old enough to remember the Grandy's restaurant chain then you are in luck. There is one located in Victoria. I eat there at least twice a year when passing through the area.
