http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Ebony_Shoe Notable winners include Vincent Kompany and Marouane Fellaini. I think all professional league's need an award to commemorate players of African origin. Kudos to Belgium for being at the forefront of this initiative and recognizing the true Ebony talent out there.
Seems kind of racist. This is an award that discriminates on the basis of national origin. Not only should all pro leagues not do this, no pro league should do this. Instead, how about awards based on the play of the individuals, rather than their skin color. Maybe one for the player who's value to his team is more than any other player. Could you imagine the outcry if the NBA came up with an award for the best white player (or player of "European origin")?
this basically. lol. i could get a "best foreigner" award. and i could get a "best foreigner" award that applies to non-Euros only (because in Belgium most Euros aren't considered foreigners). but "Ebony shoe".... oh man.
if they make an award for whites too, they'll have to make one for Asians. Bamboo shoe? Honestly, how did they think this was a good idea in the first place. per wiki, this isn't even an old award. It was created in the 90s, when most people were already very sensitive of those issues.
yeah, I understand the idea of having a best "import" award or best Belgian born player- but to do it by race? That's just wrong.
