They are making money off of yao's name. Is this authorized? http://store.yahoo.com/gotyao/index.html
well..they are very clever not to mention the whole name "Yao Ming" on that website. I don't think anyone can sue them. Afterall, there are thousands of people with Yao as the last name in this world, I guess.
Pretty underhanded thing to do. But I think they have been smart to cover themselves like the above poster said. Don't think there is anything that could be done to stop this.
Actually, I think the NBA's lawyers are about 10,000 times better than those of Axion Sport. I would bet they probably could successfully bully Axion out. They don't say Yao Ming, but they say Yao and relate the whole thing to basketball. I can see potential for a lawsuit that would be too burdensome for Axion to fight, even if they could win.
It certainly does leverage his name. but it's done pretty well, I think. There's a story floating around some other boards about the gotyao.com site -- the site/gear was created to fight racial stereotypes, and do it in a fun way. Does anyone think it works?
I'm sure they can claim this is a parody, and parody is protected under the law, so I doubt you'll see any lawsuits over this one.
