I wish people would stop saying this. We were only truly mediocre for 1 season. 2009-2010, 2010-2011: Hello, Yao Ming was still here? We were trying to build a championship roster around him, not trying to be bad.

He overvalues his assets and its costs him. I bet Hennigan would've traded Dwight to Houston if Morey wasn't overvaluing the recent draftees. You pony up these project players, have Lowry,Scola Dwight and watch these role players flock here

Nobody expecting a championship... That is in God's hands.

just better than worst attendance, some TV appearance, some playoff buzz, some news talking and hopefully contending someday or at least some direction and some hope...

    Right now, Rockets have none.

Morey has done the worst GM work.

    Why not?

Morey and Les are shooting for that.

May not ever happen....but that's the goal.

Attendance, TV etc. will come with winning.

The direction is set now, FINALLY....and they want the gold.

Your tune will change soon enough.

He didn't overvalue players. Based on what Les said, it's clear the Rockets put in a solid final offer, but short of "going all in" like they planned. That's why the Rockets fell out of the picture suddenly, after constantly being one of the teams mentioned. Les wants to ride things out again.

Suddenly our assets are overvalued because Orlando took a far worse offer than ours. Oh well, more power to us. Unleash the rooks.

Well, I don't think I'm going to accomodate you. For 2 reasons:

    1. What we were trying to do is irrelevant. We were mediocre in reality. If we could have added a superstar to our mediocre team, we could have zoomed to contention and it would have been awesome. But, it didn't happen. Instead, we were mediocre for three (3) seasons.

    2. After the 2009 second-round exit, we knew the McGrady era was toast and would have to reload around Yao. We also knew starting the '09-'10 season we were taking a real gamble on Yao's health. By '10-'11, we were already shifting away from Yao, capping his minutes and putting most of our hope in some Morey acquisition. It's not like Yao's season-crushing injuries were a surprise.

Just look at Morey's trading history, we've always said he has committed a steal. Always. If he feels a trade cant be made where he comes out on top clearly he probably wont do it. He disregards how much a trade can help our team and is too consumed with a trade itself on how he can outsmart other GMs and make savy moves instead of improving the roster period to win games

Chad Ford and John Hollinger were the best forecasters out of 30 ESPN pundits last year:

    http://deadspin.com/5921063/john-ho...-predictions-jon-barrys-were-nearly-the-worst

Here's what they had to say today about the Rockets:

    Rank: 13

"On the heels of one of the most interesting offseasons in NBA annals, you might be surprised to see our overall ranking of the Rockets hasn't changed that much. They've moved players and draft picks hither and yon, including jettisoning both of their point guards after each had a career year, and amazingly the one guy they haven't moved is perennial trade rumoree Kevin Martin.

Houston's master plan was to get a star to succeed Yao Ming, and so far it hasn't borne fruit. Nonetheless, the Rockets are in a pretty strong position going forward, even if their current roster is nothing to write home about. With several decent young players -- including four recent first-round picks, another in his second season, 2011 second-rounder Chandler Parsons and undrafted third-year pro Jeremy Lin -- the Rockets should have a quality core. They've solved their big-man riddle, too, with defensive ace Omer Asik.

Alas, a lack of star talent still plagues them. The Rockets' bids for Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard failed, but they've put themselves in a great position by having max cap room for each of the next three offseasons. They also have a strong, tax-free market that's popular with players, an ownership willing to spend both on payers and ancillary assets such as draft picks, and a strong management team that we ranked seventh.

Houston's draft position is the other potential path to a star -- it may have high picks the next two years, and will have a near-certain lottery pick from Toronto as well; only five teams rated higher in our draft category.

Thus, while 2012-13 may not be much fun, we're still optimistic on Houston's prospects for the three following seasons. It has three paths to getting its star -- trade, free agency and draft -- and at some point one of them will deliver."

So you blame Morey for taking a gamble on Yao's health? Did you see the Blazers immediately blowing everything up after Roy went down?

I don't think its reasonable to blame Morey for riding it out to see if Yao was really done for good or not. It's not everyday your franchise star's career is in doubt and you have to make a decision to blow it up or not based on his health.

Without some veteran presence, we'll end up being the Wizards.

its called rebuilding, we have a completely new team who we dont know will be successful or suck, wait till mid season to start judging morey, as far his effort, he cant control wether other teams want to take the offers he puts on the table

I would venture a guess that Morey's approval rating on this board has gone up by a significant percentage in the past couple of weeks based upon the following:

    1. We know now that Morey never made an offer to Orlando for Dwight close to the package ESPN previously reported;

    2. Morey is committed to rebuilding via youth (a/k/a tanking), and apparently was finally able to sell Les on this strategy; and

    3. This thread is only getting 2 stars.

Yao's season ending injuries may not have come as a surprise, but as long as there was an even outside shot at him coming back, there was no way Les was going to authorize Morey to gut the team. Frankly, the odds were about the same that Yao would return to action Ilgauskas-style as they were that we'd get a superstar out of the draft. They were both pretty slim. And that's not even considering that Yao Ming was a license to print money for this team. There was absolutely no scenario, other than Yao retiring, where Morey would've been able to blow up the roster like he did this offseason.

It was only when Yao retired that we could actually move forward. We took a shot at Dwight Howard and fell short - but we'll have two high draft picks and a ton of cap space since the roster moves to make a shot at Dwight Howard freed all that salary space AND will set us up to tank.

And for all the Dwight Howard drama, he's hardly the only good-to-great player who was unsettled at his current team. Kevin Love, Chris Paul, LaMarcus Aldridge are on the horizon and James Harden might not want to go, but he might not have a choice.
