Because you have known (or heard about) so many white women named Tamika? I knew two women in college who had a professor who constantly referred to one with the other's names. The white one was named the Letitia (sp? - the Latin form) while the black was named Natalia. I guess the professor only saw Latisha, Lateesha, or something. I agree with heb - go whitey go!
That seems weird to me since I've known several Letitias who were white and none who were black. That would never be a name I would consider to be "black" (even if I were just hearing it and not seeing it spelled out). Of course, the same goes for "Tyrone" for me since I immediately think of Tyrone Power when I hear that name. Not sure why. To use Doctor Robert's example, if I were looking through the phone book for a lawyer, I would think twice about picking one who went by the name "Brandi" or "Tammi" or "Dylan" or "Pacey". I think the point is that there are some names that just don't sound "professional" and, to us white people, many of those names are, unfortunately, "black" names. I think that's wrong (and I admit that I would probably do the same thing without even thinking about it. Not now, of course, because I'm aware of the problem. But yesterday? Probably), but I do think it's something larger than simply race, at least in my case. I obviously can't speak for everyone.
