You don't make a deal for the third-best player in the NBA simply to move a couple bad contracts and for the possibility that you might can move an aging Gasol for a few pieces down the line. You deal Dwight Howard to kick start your own rebuilding with premium draft picks and/or prospects.

If you're Rob Hennigan, young prospects and high draft picks are the far-and-away top priorities. If you can't get them in a deal for Dwight, I think acquiring Gasol and hoping you might can get those assets for Pau is rather foolish.

Remember that even Stern pointed at Fegan for the leaks.

The magic would take pau and afflalo over future picks and young assets rockets have? Lakers get their wish, no wonder Dwight canceled his thing today

I would guess that you're correct about the impact players, but I also think we'll see some wild swings during the season with our current lineup. They just won't bring full effort every night due to inexperience. We'll see them beat 2 or 3 championship caliber teams consecutively, then lose 5 in a row to terrible teams. I think Scola's consistency and reliability can't be overlooked. On a good night, our guys could eclipse anything Scola had to offer... then they'll go scoreless.

    Sure does.

    My guess would be

    1. Clear bad contracts.
    2. Acquire draft picks.
    3. Land young talent.

I don't think Gasol/Afflalo meets those goals, but who knows... their goals could be "get big man" or "add speed in the backcourt". I would think a team like Orlando needs to rebuild.

How does it serve Fegan though? I definitely think that guy has been leaking info, but I don't see how it benefits him or Howard. These look more like Orlando organization leaks to me -- it definitely benefits them to get other teams (namely Houston) to think a deal is close and/or to raise the bar for new offers.

Philly doesn't have it's 2013 1st rounder (lotto protected), so earliest pick they could be sending will be in 2015.

Nuggets can give 2 of their 1st rounders along with 2014 Knicks 1st, and the rights to swap 2016 picks with the Knicks.

    Asik, lolz!
    Lin, lolz!!!
chandler, name is so white, lolz!!
    Martin, lolz!!
    Patterson, Lolz!!!!
i can see how if you get easily influenced by what 'experts' say and then take a look at each of our players individually, the reaction would be....

How will that team even beat the bobcats??11!!! Lulz!!!

But lin reality, our gm collects assets that can play as one and now we finally have a young defensive beast that will show up every game and not just when he is out of hibernation.
This team will continue right where last season's team left off before losing seven in a row.

Anybody think something could happen soon due to Dwight's flaking on his basketball camp. The Magic organization is really getting some black eyes now by delaying this.

This rumor came within hours after Dwight flaked.

    My guess

    1. Clear bad contracts. (Cap space to sign star)
    2. Acquire draft picks/young talent. (Players with potential to be star)
    3. Land easy to move assets that can be traded for star player or draft picks/young talent. (Assets to trade for a Star)

Basically....Orlando GM is Morey with the Evil Mustache.

I just dont understand why Orlando would leak this proposed trade that everyone knows is a bluff and everyone knows that they want to rebuild.

What if we can come away with Gasol and Bynum in this while LA gets stuck with bad contracts and our youngsters end up in Orlando?

They can't be that dumb, can they? This deal (from what we know at least) is an absolute turd for the magic.

I think if anything this helps Morey's leverage more.

    This multiplied by 1 billion.

There is no point even analyzing this proposed trade or wasting 20 pages on it because it will not happen. It is just a ludicrous trade proposal.

One explanation could be that the Magic want to do due diligence and see if anyone makes an offer to them for Gasol. Since he obviously doesn't fit, other teams might get wind of this and make proposals. I still doubt that Afflalo + Gasol trade return + unloading a contract is better for Orlando than simply shipping Dwight to Houston. But they might as well play the scenario out and see, since the Lakers have done all this legwork.

That's the only way this proposal has any chance. It would be beyond idiotic to trade Howard for the possibility that maybe you can flip Gasol in a year for assets you need. If you're dealing the third-best player in the world, you'll never hold more cards than you do right now.
