That and the way the offense plays when games are televised nationally. If I were being wined and dined by all the major programs, Texas would be LAST on my list. It makes you wonder what exactly Brown does/says to get such gifted athletes to our school every year. Maybe he took a page out of Lebron James' mom's book and gives out hummers? (yeah that was dumb, i know)
Players sign with Texas cause Mack Brown's an honest, decent guy who will look out for your interest over his. And it's not a bad school and place to play either. The article will have little effect on our recruiting. I bet any recruit who tells the coaches he is wavering after reading this article will get a call from Simms.
what an understatement...texas is a fantastic place to go to school and play football!! it's a freaking religion here!! the girls are quite attractive (something that MIGHT be important to an 18 year old guy)...you know you'll be on TV a lot...Texas has turned out its share of pro athletes... it's a lot better than "not a bad school and place to play..."
I actually read the article on the Longhornfanzone.com and voiced my opinions there. I really don't need to 'copy and paste' anything since I'm a University supporter who can speak his own mind quite well. Any other questions, Kojack?
Good point. Simms and Trahan are supposedly two of our best recruiters. Alot of what Chris says is correct, and Major is the x factor here. However, Tennessee fans boo as well. They also leave early too. Up until this year, I thought Clausen was a better QB than Chris. He probably would have thrown a few ugly ints there as well as at Texas. They would have booed him there as well. Sad, but true. Oh and Greg Davis does indeed suck.
Horn fans will always be split on this one, so there is no need to even debate the issue. Major did some great things but he was in no way the man legend that he became once his playing time decreased. Much of his legendary status is b/c he was an enigma of sorts. True he won some big games, but he also was at the helm of some terrible losses versus teams that we should have beaten. As for what Chris did against OU, all I can say is Major was the starter when we had our asses handed to us 3 years ago. Major never mad e it through an entire season without injury and I feel that changing QB's due to injury in the middle of the season is not something you want to do if you are making strides toward a successful season. Love him or hate him, Chris cam to The University and represented The University with class and that is nearly as important as wins and losses (the same can be said for Major).
Miami, UCLA, Notre Dame and Texas. Those would be places I would consider playing football if I had the choice. I like the city and love the school of course. Texas is definitely one of the ten best places to play college football. That's why, 11-2 and no conference title doesn't give me a woodie. It's not the end of the world, but Texas should expect more than 0 conference titles in 5 years. Good to see Mack is moving in the right direction.
Nah, that just about covers it, Starsky. Collegiate athletics can be a wonderful thing, creating excitement for alums & students alike. It's just kind of sad when some people put so much stock into the performance of kids that their failures on the field of play can engender the hysterics I've seen the past few years. But you're right, gr8-1, it's not something unique to UT football.
Bottom line, this guy took on the hype, no one told him to go on Dan Patrick's Radio Show every week, so you can't just say he didn't live up to it. And furthermore, anyone who blames Mack Brown, and I know he isn't the best Xs&Os coach, can look at last year's BigXII Championship game. Simms throws three picks and has to be replaced, and Applewhite comes in and makes our offense look like the 99-00 St Louis Rams. All the "its not his fault " arguments go out the door when you reference that game. The only mistake Mack Brown made was not making him sit and watch Major. The guy never seemed to progress mentally, and maybe part of that goes on Brown, but you can see with this article, alot of it goes on him. I get tired of people saying he is such a great guy because he is clearly an arrogant spoiled brat. Nowadays if an athlete isn't caught DWI or beating up his girlfriend, then he's a great guy.
well...when you blame your shortcomings on someone or something else, i find that less than "classy." particularly well after the fact.
Having met and talked to Chris on many occasions, he's probably one of the nicest guys on the team. He didn't deserve all the crap he dealt with last year. So what if he never won a Heisman? He's been a solid QB for the Horns this year, and if not for a defensive meltdown against Texas Tech, the Horns would have played in the Rose Bowl. Many Horn fans, including myself, will admit that Mack should have started Major last year. At the risk of being labeled a "hater" I admit that he didn't progress as well as planned. But he showed lots of improvement this year. Really the only one who really held Simms back was this man, Greg Davis. He turned a potentially high-powered offensive attack into one that featured the 3-yard out, the WR screen, and the ill-fated shovel pass on 3rd and long.
You are clueless in your assessments of the entire QB situation first off. Secondly, when did you meet him, what did he do that gave you this impression, tell me how you come to these conclusions. You are a riot, and likely an aggy judging by the bitterness.
I agree with you, there. What my problem was the fan's reaction to it...it was more anti-Simms than anti-Brown when it should've been the other way around.
Simms will get a chance to prove himself soon enough. Then there won't be any more excuses to throw around.
My brother worked with the team. Chris is the most well-grounded, and polite person on the team, well one of them.
I am a longhorn, first and my judgement comes from the article and other articles and interviews. I am bitter about nothing, and I doubt that all of you jock riding, autograph seekers are really friends with him either. Just like people can think Chris Carter and Randy Moss are a-holes from what they see in the media, I can have my opinion about Chris Simms. Just because you probably chased him down after one of his Oklahoma debacles to give him a handkerchief to cry on doesn't mean you know him either.
