Ok so for the past 6 or so months I've been looking for a new career a new job. I've went through to many struggles finacially that I'm tired of putting my family through these struggles. So I've come to the point that I would like to get into the Oil and Gas Industries. I've read many post from different people here and on other websites about how much income they get working for these type of companies. So I was wondering what Kinda of positions are there for a 23 year old with only a High School Diploma to apply for that I would qualifiy for? If anyone has any information or ideas of what companies and positions I could apply for I would love to know. I currently work as a Shipping Tech shipping out product via fed ex and UPS so I doubt that helps me any in this kinda industry and before this I've only worked at McDonalds as a Manager so I doubt that helps either. LOL

I was going to recommend starting out in the shipping area. Without a degree or experience it's relatively tough to get involved. I am unsure whether you want to deal directly with oil and gas, such as exploration, drilling and production or if you just want to work for an oil and gas company.

Either way you have to get noticed somehow, and they will not hire you to do a high level job, too much risk. Also, keep in mind you will have to work twice as hard as everyone else to compete for a position.

As Rock3t Man said I don't think you will want to deal directly with the drilling and production since you did mention your family. The people who work on the rigs work very stressful schedules and make it very hard to maintain a family life because you will be gone anywhere from 2 weeks, to multiple months at a time depending if it is on-shore or off-shore.

Working on the rigs pay well and don't need a college degree... Just the ability to work long hours doing manual labor.

the trick about working rigs is that you are out for an extended length of time.
I used to party with this guy who worked rigs, and IIRC he was out for three weeks and in for a week. Since he didnt have any responsibilities, he came in with lots of money and a burning desire to party hearty.

You would be better served by going thru the companies that provide labor for turnarounds just to get your foot in the door.

The only member here that I know for sure might have better advice for you is Behad, he has worked for years in one of the biggest plants in this area.

Well really I guess I would like something that pays good. I don't mind a little competition since just about every job I've worked at I've always done good and have always been given the chance to move up. Its really about the money though cause like I said I need something that can help me finacially as well.

If you want to work in the Oil and Gas industry you are better off working for an McJunkin Redman Corporation (supply chain management company) or something like it. Without a degree you will likely not find a job going straight to Exxon, Shell, etc.

There are numerous companies like that in the Houston area and you can start out expediting or something like that to learn knowledge of the material in the industry and work your way up. I started out doing that and no I am up to Senior Project Manager (over 8 years).

I only have an associates degree but with a little over 4 years of Project Management I plan on taking my talents to a bigger corporation.
