I'm not saying he's not doing a good job because the Rockets have missed the playoffs. But I can so far other GMs have done better. The celtics went from 24-58 to an NBA championship in one season. The Thunder went from 23-59 to 50-32 in one season. The Rockets have hovered around 500 for the past three seasons missing the playoffs each time. So you're saying Morey has been unlucky. I can agree with that. But at some point, that just becomes a lame excuse. I can agree that one deal could all of a sudden make him Exec of the year. But until then, I think it's okay to be skeptical. For as much undervalued talent he's acquired, he's also acquired overvalued talent. For every Parsons, Patterson, and Landry there's Jermaine Taylor, Morris, and Joey Dorsey. It just seems like so many on here believe he's a genius because he acts like he knows what he's doing.I say prove it. Get us a winner.
He drafted these players (that I like and hope we keep) supposedly as assets to get Howard. He wasn't planning to keep them, he's just forced to because the Magic aren't agreeing to the deal. Perhaps if we didn't know he was going after Howard, the Asik deal would look better. Jeremy Lin was not the 1st PG he offered a contract to. I'm not the owner so my opinion doesn't mean anything but if I were I would assess my GM by the goals he's made. Morey came out and said the Rockets need to get a superstar to Houston. Still hasn't happened. True, it hasnt been all his fault but as a Rockets fan I have higher expectations. If they're going to tank, do it. Don't say you're rebuilding but still dangling the building blocks as assets to get a superstar here.
That interview actually turned me back on to 1560 a bit. Granato is a known quantity, but Sean the Cablinasian is quickly rising in my estimation as a top notch radio personality. He asked the most poignant questions such as the one that got Daryl talking about having that much cash invested in the center position. John tried and failed when he mentioned Orlando, but still he put in some of his typical nice tongue and cheek comments ("I don't think you said anything fine-able today") that can make him a great straight man. I'm not even going to talk about 610. They're like the Astros now; no talent worth giving any breath to. I listen to Lance Matt and Adam in the morning, Charlie in the afternoon, John Harris in the midnight shift (if I happen to be working then myself), and now, I'll give more respect to Sean and John than I had in the past. Maybe a podcast interview here and there.
You know, I really agree with your perspective. So many posters have become so fascinated with the "process" they tend to lose sight of the "product." I don't fault them because no GM has stirred the brew more than Morey. He is a whirling dervish of "process." Like you, I am still waiting for the "product." Assets and cap space don't win games, good players do. I am glad that the the Rockets' brain trust has stop fooling themselves and confronted the fact that they were stuck in basketball purgatory. We are obviously in full rebuild mode, a gear we should have shifted into about three or four years ago. Nevertheless, I am actually more excited as a fan than I have been in a while. If you are going to be good, let's be really good; if we are going to be bad, let's be really bad.
I'm guessing this isn't Captain Nimo's first deep dive into Morey bashing on this BBS. Hey whatever happened to Dreamshake1?
schedule a parade whoa whoa whoa .. slow down there i have not read ONE person say rockets are going to win a championship (Which is what that quote is usually in reference to) we are just excited about their potential and most of us realize that if we go with the rookies we will not be very good next year but the focus is on the future I was reading on one of those wack power ratings how the writer described the jazz GM as having done a masterful job of rebuilding while keeping the team competitive .. i laughed bc thats one of moreys criticism that he has only produced winning teams and not playoff contenders while rebuilding
You're right I haven't seen anyone say the Rockets are going to win a championship this season. That was an exaggeration on my part. I love the Rockets and I want to see them succeed. I actually like the players that were drafted and I'm excited to see their future. My comments are more about how people view our GM's success. I'm not just looking at this draft or this offseason, I'm looking at the job he's done as a GM as a whole. He's done some great deals but also made some decisions that made me really scratch my head.
You're reinforcing my point. Danny Ainge was very fortunate that his former teammate who happened to be a Celtics HOFer (our current coach) was willing to gift the Celts a superstar in Garnett, while completely decimating his own team. I don't think that makes Ainge a genius. The key to the Thunder's ability to become a winner was their luck in landing the #2 ball and Portland choosing Oden over Durant. Even Kahn wouldn't have screwed that up. That doesn't make Presti a genius--it makes him lucky. What makes Presti good is picking the right guys where there was a lot more uncertainty--like Westbrook and especially Harden. But without their centerpiece in Durant, they're just a middling team, not a contender. This is what happens when you need to make decisions under uncertainty. You plan for contingencies. Go for the low probability/high payoff outcome of landing a superstar without completely decimating the remaining team. In the likely scenario that you don't land the right trade, you do your best to draft players with good upside. At each point in the decision tree, his moves made sense, given the situation and uncertainty.
Perfect example of how regardless of what Morey does some of you guys are going to bash him. What's wrong? Gettgin rid of damn near every veteran on the team and going with a roster that averages 22.8 years old not tanking enough for you? Sheesh
Face it. You will bash Daryl Morey regardless of what he does. 1. Did Daryl Morey have an Al Jefferson to trade for Kevin Garnett? Answer: No 2. Did Daryl Morey have multiple top 5 picks in good drafts to land players like Westbrook, Durant etc...? Answer: No 3. Did Daryl Morey have cap space that he could sign free agents with? Answer: No In one season since Yao Ming has retired (Not 2, Not 3, Not 4, Not 5...) he has created cap space, and Al Jefferson like assets to go along with a team that has lots of picks and will likely be a very high lottery team. So are you happy? Answer: No Daryl Morey is doing the things you want and you still are not happy. We are in full rebuild mode but because he is not saying publically that we are tanking you are still bashing him? Did Preston ever say he was tanking when he traded Ray Allen? Some people are just not happy unless they are bashing Daryl Morey.
Again. I'm not bashing DM. Like I've said multiple times in this thread; I choose to wait and see results. But I'll humor you and go through your points. 1. You're right he doesn't have an Al Jefferson, a 15th draft pick. 2. Well with this team maybe he'll get those picks and get the chance to prove himself a genius. 3. He had enough cap space to attempt to lure Chris Bosh to Houston and enough "assets" to possibly trade for a superstar. 4. Actually I am very happy.
