Very good interview - props to the 1560 crew - thanks for trashing the J&R duo as jokers - Morey is still one of the best GM's in the league.
Loved hearing how Morey & co. analyzed the value of contracts of Gortat vs. Asik. Also expanded upon previous comments made on the minor league structure of baseball vs basketball and his relationship with the Astros front office. One of his better interviews for sure.
I thought it was a great interview. Loved it when DM talked aobut his pevious interview with Josh Ennis.
I forgot to add one point that DM made when asked if the Rockets were really considering trading all of the rookies and draft picks for D12 as was earlier reported by a lot of national media. His response, "We didn't take stupid pills yesterday".
I definitely liked the part where he said he doesn't have an issue with people who criticize the organization just as long as there are intellectual arguments behind the criticism. Maybe...just maybe he's smarter than people give him credit for.
thanks for posting, amigo. I miss Juan and lance together. =( a "source" told me that the other half of the J&R show, the half not named Rich, would flood 1560's inbox begging for a gig.
It's a shame about Rich Lord - he's very good, too bad he is co-host with a pompous butt. I've just turned off 610... Too many times he's gone on tangents that have nothing to do with sports. Josh Innes wants to make a name for himself, and he is trying the shock jock approach; even though he claims on his bio he is not a shock jock. He'd be perfect in Philadelphia or New York. His in your face attitude doesn't fly well with me. Telling people who don't agree with him to turn off the Radio or change the channel.... NEWS FLASH, I Did... And I am a huge Barry Warner Fan. But I'm boycotting 610 form my sporting news radio. Besides listening to the Texans games, I am switching the station. 610 must have some idiots running the show. To allow a host to tell people to turn off the station if you don't like it.
i have single handedly banned SR610 completely entirely bc of Josh Innes and his small penis syndrome personality
Morey is going to London to support one of our coaches that is an assistant at the olympics. Jealous of the Minor League system in the MLB to test out prospects etc. Did the same comparison he did for hoops TV about Salmon vs Elephants. Just likes to be able to have a lot of talent to see get to a higher level. Says Jeremey Lin would have been coming up a minor league system and had would not have been waived. Would have been called up in the "Pau Trade" or this year with the loss of Dragic and Lowry. Asik doesn't need to be better at defense. If he isn't a top defender then our scouts made a mistake. Offense is all gravy. he is limited there. provides screens and dunks which is what he needs. Maybe not in points but offensive rebounds and other things. Said he will have CD and McHale working with him on the offensive side. In regards to how they evaluate and don't overpay players. Asik and Lin both valued to Morey at about 8 million. Didn't see that with Gortat, Dragic, or Lowry. Omer - had a much more significant international career with a good track record. Came to the league and did the same thing as compared to Gortat. Gortat didn't matter since Phoenix matched. Gortat had a higher risk profile then Asik. Scouting didn't looked great since there was only 600 minutes and a terrible international track record. Asik had more minutes and better international career. Morey went on to say given the facts now it's not like Gortat is not worth it or playing on the level of Asik but based on the initial scouting. Asik and Lin would have gotten more money if they were unrestricted FA's so they feel they got a real good deal on both. Dragic contract came down to the player option he wanted. We were in a position to go after a star player and having those options would really limit their ability and flexibility to get a star player in a trade. Said players with those options in their contract are almost impossible to trade. Lowry was traded because it was a guaranteed lottery pick. Totally fine with having Asik and a max player at center (referring to getting Howard). Said it would be a great problem to have. Said these are the best questions he has gotten in about 3 weeks Brought up the interview that went viral and where he got mad. He has no problem with criticism as long as it's intelligent criticism. Heard that the radio station was bad mouthing the Rockets and him. He went on the show and they were super nice to him which he didn't like. Brought up the reports about giving up the whole team to get Howard. Said he can't answer it directly because he named a team. Said he wants to just make the right moves for the franchise. Gonna need a young player to rise up and become a superstar or we are going to have to go out and get one. Rockets have not taken any stupid pills all of a sudden and don't know what they are doing. Any moves will be done for the best of the franchise. We are obviously adding a degree of difficulty to making the playoffs with playing youth. If you are not a championship contender which we are not then winning with middle of the road players means nothing. After losing Yao that's when they knew they had to transition to a team with just all upside or players that could be traded to bring in stars. Summer league was nice and was gratifying that all 4 rookies did well. Doesn't mean that all 4 are going to turn into solid players. If even 2 of them turn into solid players then we have done well given the odds of picks from 10-20. Says that he did see the potential in Chandler Parson when he drafted him.
On Goran, Morey said that he wanted a player option and that hampers the Rockets ability to be flexible. He said that, "Player Options nearly makes a player untradable in this league." Hence, it was the deal breaker that lost us Goran. I respect that decision...
Heard the replay of Josh interview with Morey, I thought this guy is so rude to be a so called Journalist who is working on the radio station. His questions were so stupid enough to be repeated on any radio or TV.
Couldn't agree more. He is my least favorite sports radio jock ever. I will never listen to the J&R show. On Morey's interview, did anyone notice where he almost used the "asset" word in regards to Asik, and then stumbled around to find the right words? Not cutting him down, because I am a big Morey fan and still trust him to build this franchise into champion contenders. Just thought it was funny.
yawn The "emperor's new clothes" routine is getting old. I used to be "in Morey we trust", now I'm just waiting for results.
Not Possible. Since so many seem to think he is the smartest man to ever leave his foot impression on the earth Rocket River
I liked hearing about the restricted free agency versus unrestricted free agency. Morey said that Lin and Asik would of been more expensive if they would of been unresticted free agents. I hadn't thought about that. The poison pill contracts will probably be brought up at the next CBA agreement. By the way, Josh Innes is trash. I like 610 except for when his show comes on. He literally knows nothing about sports and has never had anything intelligient to say.
So, getting 3 good draft picks that should have gone higher than they actually did, getting Lin and Asik by being creative with the salary cap isn't enough results?
