Recent hauls for players in various stages of the life of their max contracts:

Chris Paul = Eric Gordon (expiring), Chris Kaman (expiring), Al-Farouq Aminu (2nd year) and a first-round draft choice.

Melo + Billups = Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton ($7M), Timofey Mozgov (rookie), Wilson Chandler (expiring), Kosta Koufos (rookie), second round picks in 2012 and 2013 and a first round pick in 2014.

Joe Johnson = Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, Anthony Morrow, Jordan Williams (all expiring), DeShawn Stevenson and a future first-round pick.

I would be reluctant to give up this year's draft picks as a first round pick, expirings and filler seems to get it done. Is there any precedent for giving decent picks or players and taking on garbage contracts?

i could see us holding off until motiejunas is tradeable to be honest. he's a center if you squint, and hennigan looks best if the trade can be portrayed as "dwight for dwight replacement PLUS pieces" rather than "dwight for pieces."

If I'm not mistaken, we couldn't trade all 3 of our picks this year for the #5 pick, regardless of who those players turned out to be and how they performed in the summer league. That Toronto pick in other words is a very, very, very important trade bargaining chip.

That being said, I doubt that Darryl right now is offering more than PP, Morris, the 2 1st round picks, taking back 3 of the bad contracts and maybe 1 or 2nd rounders to sweeten the deal.

With that being maybe what's on the table, I can see Orlando posturing to get more, such as one of our rookies, Parson or that last bad contract taken on. I don't know if Cleveland can even match what our current offer might be, or if they would even want to considering that they will probably not even get to talk to Bynum before a deal is reached, let alone think about getting a committment from him to sign long term.

If I'm Morey, I take on that last bad contract, while holding onto Parsons and my new rookies, and try to flip one or two of those bad contracts later with some of our "assets" to get that other player that we will need if we are to get Dwight and impress him this year to stay.

But under no circumstances am I letting go of Parsons, Lamb, or Donuts. I'm not saying that I wouldn't give them up for Dwight, but this is a rental and not a guaranteed deal that he will stay with us, plus I don't see the offer as it stands without them being added, being topped by anyone else for various reasons.

You get these sense that Orlando's GM is trolling with these rumors about leaving out the Rockets in the Dwight Howard trade discussions. Obviously, Houston has the better package, but it's almost like the GM is wary of Morey since he almost always comes out with the better player in trades.

Can whoever is suggesting trades on truebluenation please stop?

It's kind of embarrassing, the whole spiel about Parsons being super-extra valuable and whatnot.

"Houston's only avenue of acquiring Dwight is through a deal with Orlando."

Quote of the year from truebluenation.

The agent for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard refuted reports that his client has decided he will sign an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers -- if traded to them.

"Dwight's position has remained unchanged since the end of this past season," said Dan Fegan of LaGardere Unlimited. "He fully intends to explore free agency at the end of next season, regardless of what team trades for him, including Brooklyn."

A source said the Nets never insisted Howard commit to an extension as a prerequisite for acquiring him, which Nets president Billy King confirmed in a text message.

Howard told the Magic, according to GM Rob Hennigan, he would like to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets above any other team. The Nets made concerted efforts to strike a deal for Howard earlier this month, but were forced to stop when the Charlotte Bobcats threatened to sign their restricted free agent center, Brook Lopez, to an offer sheet.

Lopez was expected to be a key part of any deal with the Magic and signing an offer sheet could have preempted including him in any deal, depending on the terms of the offer sheet. The Nets then signed Lopez to a four-year, $61 million deal.

Since then, the Lakers have become the primary suitor for Howard, recruiting both the Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers as potential third-team participants to deliver the salary relief, draft picks and young talent that Orlando is seeking in return for their All-Star center.

The longest Howard could sign an extension, according to ESPN Insider's Larry Coon, would be three years, in either an extend-and-trade or after joining his new team.

If he waits until his current deal expires, Howard would be eligible to sign a new five-year deal for as much as $108 million.

honestly if we get howard we have to make playoffs for him to even consider staying. I have a feeling if we get him , LA will not extend bynum and just let him be a FA

Lol no way you land a Dwight or Bynum type player without giving up at least Jones.

It's almost like Dwight wants to screw Orlando out of a decent haul. Where exactly is he going to be "exploring" free agency, I wonder?

    ORLANDO
    GM: gone.
    Coach: gone.
    Star player: gone.
Possibility of a decent return: rapidly waning.

Truebluenation's going to have a poignant "D12 Appreciation" thread when this all over, I'm sure.

Why would you say that? This is great news for the Rockets considering the Lakers would only trade for him if he would sign an extension. This leaves only one team left:cool:
