I thought the Rockets had made a damn good trade. KT really wasn't part of our future, and his leaving has created room for EG to begin to blossom and for MoT to get additional minutes. We know what Mo can bring, his injury was such that it really takes up to 2 years to fully "get back." Good job CD and RT! And what about James Posey? I LOVED IT when the trade was announced. Here was have the EXACT COG the team needs: a true defensive stopper, an effective rebounder from the 3 spot, and a scorer who does not demand the ball. I didn't get a chance to see him but a few times in Denver, but somehow he found a way to average 14+ points a game on a team that has few other offensive weapons to protect him. But look at what's happening now He appears to be relegated to the same fate that befell Anderson and Quitten offensively - just stand on the perimeter so you can jack up shots. Hell, we do too much of that already. I'm no basketball expert but it seems that Posey is a slasher, a finisher and, because of his quickenss and determination, a garbage type player who can find a way to score. He has also proven to be an effective post feeder to Yao. So why hasn't our offense been modified to take advantage of his offensive skills rather than the opposite? For the life of me I cannot understand why he's not starting and commanding 30-35 minutes per game. He brings energy, grittiness and "comes to play" every night. G-- knows that is what this young team needs. I've been very critical of RT this year and this is one of the items at the top of my list. Will someone please enlighten me One more time: the whole < sum of the parts Dallas Rocket
Our PG takes about 23 shots per game (if you include FT attempts). You seriously think James Posey is going to get touches?
Riet, That's an excuse not a reason. It's the coaches job to make it happen. Maybe the inmates are running the asylum D R
Offensive skills that Posey can give to the Rockets: (1) Slashing to the basket (2) Offensive rebound/putbacks (3) Fast break- lead man or filling the wings (4) Mid range jumper (5) Occasional 3 pointer What I've seen Posey do offensive so far: (2) Offensive rebound/putbacks For someone who plays in Houston all summer, there seems to be absolutely no chemistry between Posey and players like Francis, Mobley, Moochie, Taylor. Also, he really needs to look for his shot more and be more aggressive offensively, as he definitely is defensively.
We have plenty of offensive weapons...what we need are defensive stoppers and that's exactly what Posey brings to the table. And the reason he's not starting: we need somebody that will bring some energy into the game after our starters go to the bench...someone with defensive intensity who can ALSO score. Why must Rudy change his whole offense to fit around Posey? If anything, Posey should learn how to fit his style of game into the offense to which he's done a nice job.
19 minutes/game, 3.8 ppg and 3/5 rbg is a nice job? He was averaging 14.6 points and 5+ rebounds in Denver. My point is that they are not taking advantage of his offensive skills (that have been well articulated by another poster.) That's the coaches job. Dallas Rocket
His percentage was extremely low in Denver, though. Yao, Francis, Mobley, Taylor, Rice, even Griffin all shoot a higher percentage. That would make him the 7th offensive option in my book (if you don't count Cato and Moochie).
The guards have to push up the ball quickly instead of dribbling too much in order to get Posey or the other players a good chance to score.
I also would love to see JP start, but I could care less about his offense. He was brought here to be our defensive stud, and for the most part, he has been. Watch his defense when he plays and watch what he does away from the ball. We have plenty of people that are supposed to be our scorers, we need Posey to come in with intensity and try to shut down his man, and get a few boards/putbacks and maybe even a few points if it comes to him and he has the path to the basket. Why is it ALWAYS about offense with some of you? Why can't you look at the little things that players bring to the court that don't show on the stat sheet?
Look at the team he was with, though. Denver is a little lacking in talent so naturally a good player like Posey is gonna have higher averages there as opposed to Houston. They were doing a pretty good job of that in they're two wins against Minnesota and Orlando, especially Orlando. But last night was a totally different story, they're offense was in disarray. But I agree, the Rockets are at they're best when they're dictating the tempo and pushing the ball up the court.
Because opponents continue to outscore Houston. It's true that defense wins championships; but to talk about the current Houston team in the same breath with title contenders is, at best, premature. Defense...and intelligent players win championships. On the current team, a select few players understand the mental approach to the game: Cato, Nachbar, Posey, Taylor, and Yao. (Actually, Yao is still learning.) Unfortunately for Houston, two of their supposed leaders are not part of that list. University (Cere-bro) Blue
I love what Posey is bringing to the table, most porminently "Defense", but I really love the slashing ability he has demonstrated. I want to see more of this and less standing shots...
Because Rudy's offense consists of a few people shooting the ball a lot and everybody else standing around. Look at Shandon Anderson, Scottie Pippen, and now Glenn Rice and James Posey. Rudy is still not running a motion offense, despite the fact that our personnel is better suited for it. Yao Ming and Posey are the perfect motion players. Yao can pass and has a great feel for the game, meanwhile Posey is a slasher and does all the little things. I heard Bill and Calvin talking about how 3- pointers accounted for only 20% of Glenn Rice's points, but now that's all he does. He's in the Robert Horry role, and Posey is gonna be in the same situation.
Posey's abilities on the defensive end warrant him being out on the floor more often than Rice. He's a monster defender, grabs rebounds, especially opponents missed 3's, and can run the ball up on fast breaks. I hope he's used more often as the season progreses. Adrian
Posey will get his time soon enough. Rudy does a good job of helping a player make a transition in the NBA.. Posey does not know the schemes of all the play yet. The team will benefit if Rice should come off the bench as the scoring threat. Once that happen, Posey will be starting. Like I was saying a week before, Posey will start in 3-5 weeks.
Posey has no offensive skills. You could put a ladder under the basket and he would still miss. Defense is his only skill.
Mystic Rider, Great insights re. James Posey. His "no offense" carried us tonite. Guess RT had no choice but to play him Dallas Rocket
