After next season we will only be able to keep a certain number of players out of the exp draft. Who do you think considering contract status's will the team expose to them? Johnson's Charlotte franchise to play in 2004-05 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press NEW YORK -- The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the league's 30th team Friday, granting an expansion team to Charlotte to be owned by billionaire Robert Johnson. The team will begin play in the 2004-05 season. "It gives me great pleasure to welcome Charlotte back into the NBA, since we appreciate how supportive their fans have been in the past,'' commissioner David Stern said. "We are particularly excited to have Robert Johnson as our newest owner. Bob has shown a great understanding for building a new company, and we are confident in his ability to develop a strong NBA organization.'' The approval of the Board of Governors, with one representative of each of the 29 ownership groups, was considered a formality. Only one owner, Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks, expressed public reservations over whether expanding to 30 teams was a sound idea. The new team will replace the Hornets, who left Charlotte after last season and relocated to New Orleans. Johnson also takes over ownership of the WNBA's Charlotte Sting, effective immediately. He was chosen last month by the NBA's expansion committee, getting the nod over a group led by Boston businessman Steve Belkin that included Hall of Famer Larry Bird. The price of the new franchise was $300 million. Johnson is the founder and chief executive officer of Black Entertainment Television, a subsidiary of Viacom Inc. He becomes the first black majority owner of a major American professional sports franchise. In 2000, Johnson sold BET to Viacom for approximately $3 billion. The all-stock transaction made Johnson the second largest individual shareholder in Viacom behind its chairman, Sumner Redstone. Johnson's team will play its inaugural season in the Charlotte Coliseum and move to a new $260 million arena to be constructed for the 2005-06 NBA season.
I think we can protect 7 players. Here is my guess: Protected: Francis Mobley Griffin Yao Cato Nachbar Posey Unprotected: Rice Taylor Morris Norris Collier Hawkins Maddox B
Assuming that's pretty much the roster next year, you've pretty much nailed it. That would probably be the list if the exp draft was this offseason.
OK. Just say that the new Charlotte Franchise picks up Norris...do they have to pay him his current salary? Or is his contract with the Rockets torn up, and a new one written for him in Charlotte? And what happens to our players who are not picked? Do we have to re-sign them again, or do their old contracts remain the same?
Cato has come a long way. We now want to protect him. I would like to put a different spin to it. There were rumors that the Texans made a deal with the Jets before the official protected list came out. Basically, the Jets would not protect Young if we took Coleman. Or something like that. My question is: Should we make a deal with the new team? We won't protect Cato if you take Mo? We can then be a player for free agents!
You pretty much nailed who I would protect. But knowing them I doubt they would protect Nachbar (unless he has a great second half of the season). They'll probably protect like, Moochie instead. It's really not fair because it's a lack of playing time that's keeping him down though.
During the expansion draft for the NBA, a team can only lose a max of ONE player. So, all of y'alls if then talk are useless.
They would never save mooch for Boki. There are mooches all over the league. easy to replace. Boki is our next year first round pick because we will not have it next year.
I agrEE w/B, if this was done today, but remember this is still a year and a half away... Rice's contract will be gone, and Taylor, Morris or Mattox could kick into gear by then, someone could be traded or injured ...
Yeah, I'm basing my list on potenial, and everyone staying with the team until the expansion draft. We will not have a first round pick for worry about next year, so that is one less player to worry about. B
There is only one expansion team, so they can only take 12 players from among 29 teams. The Rockets may not lose anybody or, at most, one player. This is not that big of a deal.
