The "bomb" was dropped on Chicago during the July Moratorium. The "ridiculous" contract structure of Lin's offer sheet (which was renegotiated from a previously agreed-upon four-year deal) is the same as the structure of Asik's offer sheet agreed upon on July 2.

My point was Chi knows what to expect and I'm sure they've had plenty of discussions about it, and know what they want to do, thus could be quicker in their deliberation time. Knicks thought they knew, but then we changed it on them at the last second.

Yeah, Im not terribly impressed with Machado yet, but I see some good PG skills. I'm not gonna judge the kid yet, SL are notoriously unreliable in judging future success, but unless he makes a big leap in confidence, I dont see him as any better than third string at this point in time. Id feel better with Zoran playing backup point than Machado this year.

Dont get me wrong, I do think Machado has the skill level to be a NBA point guard, I just think its gonna take a year or two to get there.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification.

Still, I'm pretty sure Chicago will take the full 3 days to officially match, even if they proclaim to the media that they'll match. New Orleans did the same thing to Phoenix with the Eric Gordon offer sheet.

Thanks. I feel pretty confident that Chicago will match. As opposed to NY, Chicago has actually been sheding salary over the last couple of weeks (I assume to make room for Asik).

Once it is official on Lin, Rockets will have to waive one player, wait 48 hours, then sign Omer Asik to offer sheet and begin that process.

Why do we need to waive another player? I thought that was why Scola was an amnesty cut? Who would we waive?

Barring TRADES (which is still a legit possibility), in order to have the cap room necessary to make the Asik offer sheet AND still retain Courtney Lee's cap hold (which the Rockets DEFINITELY want to do), they need to first:

    (1) Renounce their rights to Goran Dragic (foreclosing their ability to do a S&T with PHX); and

    (2) Waive one of the minimum-salaried, non-guaranteed contracts (from among Jon Leuer, Josh Harrellson, Jerome Jordan, Courtney Fortson and Diamon Simpson). Greg Smith's 2012-13 is guaranteed for about $381k, so waiving him would still leave the Rockets just an ounce shy of being able to make the Asik offer sheet.

As a poster mentioned above, Josh Harellson is a legit candidate for waivers, since his salary becomes guaranteed after August 15.

Another possibility is Jon Leuer, whose salary should become guaranteed as soon as the Rockets play their last summer league game. Also, unlike the others, I don't think Leuer could be aggregated in trades (such as a Dwight Howard trade) until late August.

That said, Leuer (and to a lesser extent Harrellson) are legit NBA players, so it would be a shame to just waive them for nothing. Maybe a guy like Simpson (with really no realistic hope of making the regular season team) will be waived instead.

EDUCATED GUESS: I would not at all be surprised if the Rockets somehow manage to trade a guy like Leuer or Harrellson somewhere for a future second rounder. That would be a major win given the situation, IMO. That said, I'd actually prefer to hold on to Leuer.

Waiving Harrellson or Leuer would be a mistake.

I apologize if this has been addressed, but why do we have to wait 48 hours before signing Asik to offer sheet?

Rockets have to have cap space equal to the average of the 3 years of the contract when offered

I'm wondering that as well.....why was that never mentioned before? It just seems like this process is getting more and more delayed each and every day that passes. Rockets fans have been patient enough!! :)

Can't sign him till Friday, and then likely 3 more days until we hear Chicago's decision. Sigh.

Why would we need to renounce his rights?! I thought we didn't pick up his option to make him a restricted free agent? Isn't he an unrestricted free agent that can sign where he pleases?
