I don't even care about these sources. All I know is by Tuesday night, WE WILL KNOW THE TRUTH. Until then, everything is speculation.

This is gonna give me an onset of manic depression -

I'm currently on a Manic High - thinking it's all about to come together and we're gonna get Lin and DH12 . . .

but then in creeps the low - and Kidd gets a DUI, some other 11th hour yahoo team joins the Laker effort.

I just can't take this anymore - unless I start my Lithium !!!

This is how i see it.

As long as we're under the cap, the actual money owed to him for the first two years is only ~10 million, despite the cap hit being 16 mill. Then we have the option of trading his expiring contract on the final year if he underperforms. This is why I think its good value, not because I'm worried about Les' money.

Of course I don't know that much about the cap, and this may not even be valid, but that was my line of thought.

That's the part that cracks me up the most .. We increased the offer, but by my calculations, and I'm no Harvard grad,it's still quite a ways from that billion dollar mark they set.

... and wow the NY media will turn on you quicker than Raymond Felton getting in line for the all you can eat buffet.Even if they decide to match it would be hard for Lin to ever get along in NY .

just getting started on how bad of a contract this would be for the Knicks and it appears $46MM is the least they can get away with

This is based on the players we know of right now and a projected Luxury Tax of $75MM (honestly pulled that out of the air).

Haven't included any current or future draft picks, so if Bima or others could provide some info for those hits I would gladly update

any word on what Felton or Prigioni would be making?

On the Jeremy Lin front, I'm told as of minutes ago that the Knicks - who added Raymond Felton to their point guard mix last night - have still not informed the restricted free agent point guard on whether or not they'll match Houston's three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet. On the other side, it's certainly worth noting that Felton's camp - while not knowing the Knicks' decision with total certainty - is under the impression that New York is not likely to match. New York has until 11:59.59 on Tuesday night to decide.

All these media a-holes keep repeating over and over that the Knicks would match. Now they have egg on their face, and they need a way to cover their ass. So now we get the "Lin isn't they same guy anymore" spin or the "Dolan felt betrayed" spin. God forbid, they would just own up and admit they were talking out their ass.

I repeat. Pro sports media is useless.

No one is going to deny that Lin is of Chinese / Taiwanese descent. Furthermore, no one is going to deny that Les was after Lin as a marketing ploy.

That said, it sickens me that some posters on this bbs will brand Lin by his socially categorized ethnic group as opposed to recognizing him as a talented individual like any other basketball player in the NBA.

I liked Lin because of the way he played in the Spurs preseason game as a Rocket. I was a fan that day (before Linsanity) and shortly thereafter he was cut.

Hints of Linsanity then emerged when Lin posted a triple double in the D-League, but the haters discredited him. "Oh, anyone can do that in the D-League."

To some degree, Linsanity was more like a "I told you so" phenomenon to me (and perhaps many posters here who favored Lin over Jonny Flynn). I say to extent because none of us could have predicted his post-NBA-merger scoring record, but nonetheless it wasn't a complete shocker like it was for most casual basketball fans.

I will be estatic to have Lin, regardless what politically correct or incorrect ethic box idiots futilly argue about putting him in.

Nice break down! So is $45M the extra tax NYK would pay if they match Lin's ofter sheet on year 3?

i dont think its so much the money from luxury tax as the possible restrictions it puts on the knicks to make s&t's and such as a repeat offender thats likely the cause of them not matching...

i dont know the specifics of it but ive atleast seen it thrown around of how it can become restrictive on the moves they can make down the road..

It's cumulative. Not just Lin's but everybody's together.

By that time, NYK will be sending about 2-3mil in cash to every team. Lin's contract will be the primary culprit, and all of those people saying 'Yeah but they can easily trade him then' are not seeing that any team who trades for Lin is going to LOSE that 2-3mil from NYK as well, just for the privilege of signing LIN to a 15mil expiring deal.

Ouch. Who in their right mind would take on an 18mil obligation for Lin? He better be Michael Freaking Jordan by that point... lol

The problem is, NYK's roster today is not going to be their roster 3 years from now, obviously they are going to have to move/add players between now and then, that's just a fact of business in the NBA.

Counting two more drafts, and them hanging onto their max guys, the numbers I have heard have pushed that tax bill over 70 million that year, unless they basically give away all their stars.

Sometimes a few on this board are, IMO, to quick to argue the doomsday "nobody wants to play in Houston' card. Granted, the team has struggled to attract and lost out on acquiring some marquee type players, but the reasons were often more complex than a simple rejection of Houston or the organization.

I bring this up because I don't think this angle in the Lin situation is getting enough run... He clearly wants to be here. Sure, money is a part and all RFA's agree to an offer to get paid, but most do not renegotiate the deal at the zero hour. The fact that he did this makes it loud and clear... He prefers h-town over the sexier destination of NYC. Is it the city, the organization, coach McHale, or does he simply prefer the lower profile setting he is sure to enjoy here... Who know? And who knows what will transpire come Tuesday?

In the mean time... although he's not a bonfire star, he is proof that the idea that no one wants to come play on our stage simply isn't true.

that would be the minimum. The important thing to take from the table is the next $5MM in salary is taxed at $4.25 for every dollar and an extra $0.50 for every $5MM there on...

looks like the formatting got screwed up on the tax table. will fix that when I update for the picks, Felton and Prigioni.

There were some questions raised earlier about the timing of the Felton agreement and receipt by the Knicks' GM of the written, official Lin offer. It may be that the Felton deal had to be completed before receipt of the Lin because, once they received the Lin offer, they needed an additional caphold for Lin. And that additional amount of caphold may have interfered with their ability to complete an S/T with Felton in the first place. If so, it might help explain Grunwald's disappearing act as more than just childish spite, i.e, that there was an actual tactical business reason for his odd behavior.

However, I am not sure where this stands at the moment, and none of the national media has picked up and run with this potential issue. Everyone seems to have assumed that the verbal agreement on Felton was enough. Perhaps this is so, but if so, then it suggests some level of league office cooperation with the NYK. Which would surprise precisely no one.
