Exactly what I've been reading. Apparently this has something to do with the new CBA. I hope if we do sign him we don't trade him later unless he's not as effective OR we can get a franchise PG later to pair up with someone else. Either way it seems very unlikely in any reasonable sense that the Knicks would match Lin now. But NY dug that hole, they should have extended him when they had the chance instead of letting the open market dictate how much his future salary was going to be.

Funny though seeing as how Morey played this number game with RFA, first time I've read about it, is Morey going to extend his RFA from this point forward? Because I'm sure teams will try to do the same thing to Morey in the future.. All I know is Knick fan's tears are great :)

Could it be possible that NYK sources claiming not to match is a marketing strategy?

New Yorker on July 15: Did you hear Lin is leaving? That's lin-sane. He revitilized my interst in basketball... It's a sad day in New York. Good thing I didn't buy anymore Linsanity merchandise...

New Yorker on July 17: zomg!!! Lin is staying! For a while there I had my doubts!!! It's a great day in New York!! I better stock up on some Linsanity merhandise before it's all gone!

If the Rockets do not get Howard, but do somehow get Asik and Lin, the starting lineup on opening day probably looks like this.

    PG: Jeremy Lin
    SG: Jeremy Lamb
    SF: Chandler Parsons
    PF: Patrick Patterson
    C: Omar Asik

How many wins does this team get? Maybe 30, if they stay healthy? And without Asikm, which seems likely, I do not even know who to pencil in at Center. The Rockets will currently be without a legitimate Center on the roster. Then how many games will this team win? Not many.

Without Howard, this team is on the road to tankdom. Which is fine by me. The Rockets under Morey have fought the good fight over the last three years and tried to build a contender using the starting point of a mediocre roster.

This is the time to go all-in, which Morey is doing. It is time to fish or cut bait, which Morey is doing. If this last desperate hail-Mary gamble does not work, it is time to face reality and embrace a rebuilding strategy passionately and with both arms.

The Tank. Without Dwight Howard, that is where the Rockets will be this season.

    Le sigh...

The Rockets will not have Lin's 5-5-15 cap hit. It will be 8.3-8.3-8.3.

If the Knicks match then the cap hit for the Knicks will be 5-5-15.

So in your opinion does this mean Martin is still here on the bench or gone? Because if he's gone, we would have gotten somebody of value in return.

"Done deal? [...] Not a chance?"

    "They didn't have Raymond Felton".

    Please.

A lot of posters here ignore the fact that he is born in the US and as much an American as anyone. Many post come across as borderline racist.I'm not talking about someone being proud of their heritage.

It's not just the thing with Lin,many come across as racist rednecks when talking about Euro players too. It's really embarrassing and makes us look bad.

HAHAHA are you freaking kidding me? NY is saying that they felt Lin changed? That he didn't appreciate that he was given a shot? Well it makes sense, you play hardball and try to low ball a player that would have made you millions YET you blame the RESTRICTED free agent signing elsewhere for a contract?

Okay, yeah that makes sense, I know NY knows no class but dang saying Lin got a big head after he came to fame.. really? Good try NY, you screwed up on this one. Should have extended him when you had the chance. Don't blame someone else when you had the choice to avoid this.

So now the NY media goes into attack mode. First they built Lin up, but now they're going to tear him down.

    Pro sports media is pathetic.

To us as fans, I don't think salary matters as that's the team's money. The salary caphold does to us since that can determine what players are available to the team for their roster moves. But if you are worried about Les' money I'm sure he can make up for Lin's salary with marketing and ticket sales.

Oops. you're right. Put Kevin Martin in at SG.

It will not make much difference though. If Kevin Martin is the star of this team (or any team) he will wilt like a fading flower. He is not strong enough to shoulder that kind of responsibility.

I the tanking scenario, the Rockets would do well to trade Kevin Martin. If the Rockets can somehow get a first round draft pick for him or a decent defensive minded center, that would be excellent.

Man.. when was the last time an NBA organization not signed a player because of a big head? SAS should just shut up. So much spin from NYK.

SAS is full of BS! What happened to that NYK will match up to a billion 24 hours ago?

I am glad Rockets are getting a star in Lin! I haven't been this excited about Rockets basketball since Yao retired!!!

It's true. And if anyone knows how the use the press like tools and create an image, it is New Yorkers. This negative messaging cannot be coincidence. They are trying to distance themselves. To put as much of the blame of Lin as they can, and make for as soft as a landing as they can. It's a PR campaign.

(multiple metaphor alert) To me, it seems a clear signal. But once this Gennie is out of the bottle, they will not be able to walk it back. They are burning their bridge with Lin. He is coming to Houston.

Lowry wasn't going to stay and his attitude was poison enough. As funny as it is that we might be getting AB again, we don't need another AB situation where you have a disgruntled player who was one of your best and most visible players. Trading him for a pick was about as good as you were going to get for him and if the Howard trade works out, it's going to be because we got that pick.

Goran's contract called for the 4th year players option. Why would you give a rising star a players option? If he was established as a top 3 pg in the league for several years and you were renegotiating his contract, that's one thing, but he had half of a good year and showing promise that he'll be good. That 4th year makes him extremely hard to move and he's not going to be the best player on your team (or if he is, you have a bad team). Every player that isn't your superstar needs to be moveable.

Lin isn't bad. He's not as good as Linsanity made him out to be and that stretch covered some pretty terrible, aging, and injured teams last year, but he isn't a bad PG and he's smart. Smart players at PG give you intangibles that make them worth the potential upside. The 3rd year is a good expiring contract to move and the first two years aren't a killer.

Lull is going to be available next year to bring over. Machado is a great prospect that should be a viable backup and I still haven't figured out his ceiling.

We've had a pretty good history of utilizing our point guards. Alston (aside from '04 in Toronto)? AB? Lowry? None of these guys were particularly amazing in the NBA before getting minutes with us.

Wow NY is just classless. What a bunch of p*****s. All I'm hearing on the radio sounds like a jilted girlfriend. PATHETIC!!!! They loved him a week ago now they didn't really want him back because he has a big head. Yeh right.

For those who say he isn't worth it. His numbers are better than Kidd and Nash at the same point in their careers. Suck on that!
