There's 3 options on the table right now, channel the spirits of Real GM and pick your poison about what the best long term direction is.

when did Bynum guarantee an extension or is this all hypothetical, if so could you put an option for Howard guaranteed extension?

Love the thread title! I used to love those books as a kid.
I'm going to go with option 3. Play the rookies and tank and hope to get a future star in next years draft.

Any time you have an opportunity to trade for a top 5 player in the league, you take it, as long as it leaves you adequately equipped to build around him.

    That last part is important.

It's not any fun unless you can turn ahead in the book and see what is going to happen.

Now that the Nets have locked up Kevin Love with a max deal, losing him to the Nets no longer seems like a big worry.

So although I haven't been very much in favor of chasing him up to this point, I'm actually in favor of it now. We would hold his Bird Rights, and it seems like we'd be the logical default for him to resign.

So yes, I'm in favor of Dwight at this point. Still would be very happy with Bynum as well.

Ah, I see you're in the middle of this book. Depressing read.

Yeah. Lets see: Goran gone. Lowry gone. Scola about to be amnestied. Camby&Dally gone. Budinger gone. We added some unknown rookies and will add some average players with bad contracts (Hedo/JRich/Duhon).

Don't see how that's enough to build around him.

As evidenced by the results of this poll so far (equal votes for all 3 choices) this is a very difficult decision, there are so many aspects of this equation that have to be considered for each option:

1.) If we trade for Dwight Howard and he re-signs then thats obviously option numero uno. But if he doesn't commit to re-signing how much do we offer for him, how many bad contracts do we take on? To me trading for Dwight Howard is the biggest question mark, because it could put us in the worst position yet also the best. If we give up a lot, take back a lot of bad contracts, and he leaves, then we officially turn into the Isaiah Thomas run New York Knicks, but If he stays then we can potentially turn into the rockets of the early to mid-90's
    (Extremely High Risk/Extremely High Reward)

2.) Trading for Bynum is what a lot of people would like to do because they think he is guaranteed to sign an extension here and that we then end up with one of the top 2 centers in the NBA. But there are questions with Bynum as well. Will he stay healthy? Will he be a knucklehead here too? Can he be the missing piece that attracts FA's to Houston again? Is he worth building around? And his BIGGEST problem is that he isn't Dwight Howard. This is the reason that LA is willing to give him up for Dwight Howard. And one has to decide how much should be given up for a center with all of these question marks? Is it worth giving up the entire team for him since he's the 2nd best center in the game, or not worth it because he's not even a top 10 player? Another piece to consider is that Andrew Bynum will ONLY BE A ROCKET if Dwight Howard becomes a Laker! Is it worth it, to make your team a little better and in the process make another team alot better???
    (Low Risk/Above Average reward)

3.) Power-ing Forward into the future Despite what people may think I think this is by far the most risky proposition. By not trading for anyone we are leaving it up to chance that we will be able to draft a superstar. For all of the people in favor of this choice I offer up the LA Clippers, the clippers have had lottery picks and cap space for YEARS, yet they didn't become worthwhile until they brought in a superstar. Now this isn't to say that you can't draft a superstar (obviously you can) but why take the chance. People say well we'll have cap room, and alot of great picks. Well cap room may not mean as much as you may think when you're entire roster isn't even old enough to legally drink yet. There are some teams who join the lottery and get the right guy and it works (see OKC), there are many other teams that join the lottery and it takes forever to get out (see LAC, GSW, SAC, TOR, DET, CHA, etc.)
    (Moderately High Risk/High Reward)

As I type this I actually have convinced myself that if we can get Dwight Howard without giving up alot, whether he re-signs or not, that is the best option. It is the ONLY option where you are guaranteed to have a superstar on your team and if he does leave then by default you go into option #3. I personally don't believe that Andrew Bynum is good enough to get big time free agents to follow him.

It's not guaranteed, but he's been less obnoxious about the whole process than "I'll only play for Brooklyn/Fire my coach so I can leave/I'm going to sue the league to get out of my contract" Dwight.

And it makes the choices starker. A Howard guaranteed extension would be a no-brainer, runaway poll winner at least IMO.

relax, there was a day when there wasn't explosions of threads and everyone got a chance to post their take every once in awhile. Allow us long-timers to start fun threads like this, yet ask a real question, too. It brings us all back together to post our thoughts. We like to post in threads started by people who we've been posting with for awhile. Enjoy it. We didn't cause the explosion of threads. y'all noobs did. :p

Yep...people seem to forget that this asswipe got his coach fired, basically got the GM canned and then after all that demanded a trade. He has stated he won't sign an extension here and Bynum mentioned that he would consider.

Like Dwight better as a player, but why gut our roster for a one year rental?

    Bynum...

It's pretty much guaranteed. The only way Bynum wants out is if he hates Houston after spending a year here.

I actually checked to see if there was a poll like this - there's plenty of "Dwight or Bynum" threads, and "do you want dwight" threads - I don't think there was a "triple conundrum" poll out there which appears to be the manner of fork in the road that Daryl & Leslie are facing this fair morn.

I know it's not an option YET, but DH12 + CP3 would make out to be one of the best duos in the league... even better than D-Will + DH12...

Just something to think about since everyone's looking to join forces in the league nowadays.
