Michael Scott leaves and the city turns to garbage. Coincidence? I think not.

First question as a reporter I would have: Did the mayor cut his own wages and the city councils'?

Probably don't want to do this for the core personnel in the big 4: police, fire, EMT and garbage; but non-management city staff may need to bite this kind of bullet in the future.

Silly unions, fighting for workers and stuff. Too bad we can't just pay everyone minimum wage and take away all their benefits.

Way to go mayor. Let's see what happens when the garbagemen quit and the trash starts piling up.

I know I wouldn't be showing up for work if they did that to me.

I can’t see how this is legal, especially with the union contracts (and I’m anti-union). I understand that this guy is between a rock and a hard place. You can’t raise taxes enough to support the infrastructure in that town at this time (I think he’d have to raise it 78% or some crazy number). You’re about to start bouncing payroll checks. However, plans and communication should have come in long before now and last on that list should be cut everyone’s pay to min wage. There is no pretty solution, but I think massive layoffs should have been done. Cutting down the city labor force in half might not be pretty especially when it comes to a police force in a town that probably needs more, not less but I think that is your only decent, legal option.

Come on , Hightop, why not rant about the evils of "statism" i.e., the minimum wage laws requiring the police to be paid minimum wage.

Well, I guess they could always turn Scranton into a live action zombie theme park.
