http://www.nba.com/milk_rookie/power_rankings_030107.html Supposedly Yao has a slightly better stat last week. Why? Amare: 3 GP, 15.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 1.00 bpg, .486 FG%, 32.3 mpg Yao: 2 GP, 13.5 ppg, 12.5 rpg, 1.5 bpg, 29.5 mpg
It's not always about stats, it's also about presence. Amare is begining to turn heads in the NBA just like Ming did last month.
The key stat....the SUNS are WINNING while the Rockets have gone 2-3 in their last 5 HOME games. If the stats are even...they are going to go with the TEAM in which the Rookie is contributing to WINNING. Amare is on pace to get Rookie of the month in January unless Yao starts to put up games like he did in mid December (double doubles) and the Rockets put a solid winning streak together. I still think Yao will win Rookie of the Year honors though if he keeps his stats up the way they are. Chris
Amare is now getting the same type of attention from defense as Yao has been getting constantly for the past few weeks.
Who cares Amare has ROW rather than Yao? Who cares Amare has ROY rather than Yao? The most important thing: Yao keeps improving and Rockets play smart bball and win more games consistently
I am gonna have to disagree with you a little here on this one. I think that winning is considered for rookie awards. However, you have to consider which teams are getting these rookies--the lottery teams from the year before. I am not saying winning doesn't help . . . but Gasol was on the Grizz last year and most of the top rookies that are getting PT are on losing teams. Yao and Amare happen to be winning teams, but traditionally teams that play rookies a lot and rely on them are not winning teams.
Actually Amare's previous game against the Lakers was not that impressive either. He had 10rb and 10pts off 4-11 shooting, but also had 5to and 5pf in 26 minutes. So just as Yao Ming, when defenses catch up the rookie struggles. But both of these kids are good, they will come back. Let's be patient.
Why didn't you list Yao's FG%? His shooting hasn't been stellar recently and listing it might make Yao's line a bit less impressive. Besides that, it is politics. Yao took the ROM in December but they want to give Amare some credit for his work, so they throw him a little bone.
He isnt going to get it every week anyways, I mean the dude is human, you know? like was mentioned, give Amare his credit too, he is working hard!
Nevermind about Amare and the ROW thing. My concern is Yao's shooting is a bit off in recent games and if he shoots well, there will be more double-doubles and the ROY award will become certainty for Yao. Amare is good... but Ming is GREAT!
it's not any of the reasons listed so far. the reason amare has the rookie of the week award comes down to one thing and that's who has more espn highlight worthy dunks. and amare wins.
I think Yao Ming is great but I think that Amare S. is also great. I never thought I would see a high school player come in a dominate like he has been doing.
Lifting weight has really affected Yao's shooting. His arms are more toned and fuller versus those twigs he's had before. The guy will eventually adjust. Remember, he was really off on his free throws for a stretch and now is almost at 80%. This is Yao's adjustment year ( maybe even next year ) so he will struggle here and there. What I like is that he always find ways to contribute. If his shooting is off, he'll rebound and pass more. If he's not rebounding, he's blocking and hitting crucial buckets. With his size, he's always gonna intimidate and set great picks. With Yao, he has enough skills to always contribute one way or another. It's a good time to be a Rocket's fan.
You guys gotta quit obsessing about the damn awards. Rookie of the Week and crap espn awards dont put wins on the table baby... besides, you worship Yao so much, try and be more like him...he doesn't seem to care about awards, all he cares about are WINS Who gives a rat's behind about an award if it doesn't bring us wins?
David Robinson won MVP the second year Hakeem won the title. Nobody but us remembers. Awards are for losers. Weekly awards are for weekly losers.
