MOON KNOWS ALL TOO WELL HOW JINTS FEEL By GEORGE WILLIS January 7, 2003 -- Former Oilers quarterback Warren Moon was at Candlestick Sunday calling the Giants-49ers playoff game on radio when he suddenly felt a strong sense of deja vu. Watching the Giants blow a 24-point lead to the 49ers and lose 39-38 reminded him of the Oilers 1993 playoff collapse against the Bills, where Houston blew a 35-3 lead and lost in overtime. "I got so caught up in calling the [Giants] game, then I realized this is the same thing that happened to us," Moon said yesterday by telephone from California. "I know exactly how those guys feel. You're numb." It won't be easy for the Giants to recover from the second-greatest collapse in playoff history, Moon said. The emotions run the gamut. "You keep wondering what happened," he said. "Over and over again, you replay everything. You replay every play that should have went your way and why it didn't. There's a lot of shame, too. You drive home with your headlights off because you don't want anyone to know you're home. "It pretty much ruins the offseason until you get back to work again," he added. "When you go on vacation, you think about it. When you go to the beach, you think about it. Finally, when you get back to training camp, at least you have a new season to look forward to." His advice to the Giants is to remember the positives of their season and use the way the season ended as motivation for next year. He pointed out his Oilers finished 12-4 the following season and won the AFC Central. "We didn't want to taste that [bad] taste again," Moon said. "We wanted to prove we were better and that it wasn't all we were made of. We wanted to prove that we had better character and more pride. "The Giants should be proud of the way they finished the season and got back into the playoffs," he added. "They went on the road and played well against a good team. They've got a lot to build on. They're not an old football team. They'll be back. I'm sure next time they put up 38 points on the board, they're not going to lose the game." The blasted Oilers keep getting thrown back in our faces, this time from New Yawk City.
This is the precise reason I hated Sunday. Two playoff comeback victories. I knew this week would be inundated with reminders of Buffalo.
They have replayed that game on ESPN Classic over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I cant turn the channel away from the game. I watched that bullsh!t twice. I puked immediately after the game. That game will haunt me forever.
i watched too...they did an amazing job of showing the background to the season and the prelude to the game...great commentary from haywood jeffires in particular. really interesting stuff 10 years after the fact. GO TEXANS!
Worst sports day for me ever. However, when I washed my hands of the "Tennessee Oilers", I put that crap behind me. Just let it slowly....melt.....away...into nothing.
There are three subgroups here oiler fans - During playoffs they cringe when big comebacks are forming - They fear nfl films and espn classic - They get itchy when boomer mentions maryland qbs - They get shivers when a backup comes in to lead a comeback - They get excited when monday night football reminisces - Love Scott Norwood and the Giants - Expect the worst - Think Whitney Houston halftime was the best ever - Afraid of Steelers Titan Fans - Wonder what a WR is - Get excited about last minute kick returns - During the playoffs they are usually watching their team - Hate NFL Films superbowl week - Expect best players to have perennial turf toe - Expect only the best outcome - Cringe when Madden says Houston Oilers instead of Titans - Afraid of Baltimore Ravens Titan/Oiler Fans - Must go into a long explanation of why they like The Texans and Titans when asked who their favorite NFL team is. - Love the movie Castaway - Are very humble, but even in the worst of moments, we just think Adelphi miracle. - Very confused when Texans play Titans - Still say Houston instead of Tennessee - Expect Buffalo-Titans to be fantastic finish every single time
- were never oiler fans when "oiler" was proceeded by the word, "houston." - many likely were rooting for the bills during the 93 playoffs - have zero appreciation for real oilers history; certainly didn't feel the pain of the losses in houston - have very little appreciation for team history - would rather forget that any history of the franchise occurs anywhere that is not in the state of tennessee
