I'm eagerly awaiting the Big Bang Theory jokes that will come out of this discovery.

If nothing more comes out of this discovery in my life-time, I'll at least have gotten some cheap nerd jokes.

Kudos to you for actually explaining something rather than taking on a mob mentality.

I will ignore the idiots who are calling me an idiot but yet have not answered requests by others to explain the significance of this. "Its important because everyone else says so" is lazy and more ignorant than anything you are accussing me of. B-bob seems to actually know something about this and explained why its important.

It was a rash statement. As i said in my prior post, i am not suggesting they stop their research just that the timing of the announcement is not very good considering whats kgoing on in europe.

It was more than a rash statement; it was a condescending statement and I think you know that. You gave a 'shakes my head'.

Timing wise, it could equally be argued that a such an announcement could inspire and awe a continent that by your words has little to be inspired by right now.

    Science halts for no man.
Besides. This is a way better announcement than some idiot burning their toast and claiming Jesus appeared on it.

When were they supposed to announce it? Next year? Also this wasn't just a European discovery but an international effort. It is important for all the people working on theoretical and high energy physics to know about this as soon as possible as this will affect the direction of research from here on out.

HISTORICAL events recede in importance with every passing decade. Crises, political and financial, can be seen for the blips on the path of progress that they usually are. Even the horrors of war acquire a patina of unreality. The laws of physics, though, are eternal and universal. Elucidating them is one of the triumphs of mankind. And this week has seen just such a triumphant elucidation.
