Yes, if you really think Lin is a star, that deal is worth it. We don't know that, though. My problem with your approach is that you seem to be advocating an all-or-nothing mentality. Believe it or not, there's some middle ground. If you sign a player to an offer sheet, you have to consider the possibility that the opposing team doesn't match and what happens if you end up with that contract on your payroll.

A typical young player with upside (while unproven) won't cost you that much, because most are on rookie deals. Lin, however, is different. The Rockets are OK with him at $6 mil/year on their cap. They're not OK with him at $8.5 mil/year on their cap. I don't know why that distinction is necessarily a bad thing. There's some middle ground. The Rockets like Lin, if the price is right.

Unless you have evidence that Daryl Morey has missed out on deals due to poor time management ability, I think that's a very silly concern to have.

i am talking about lin case. i feel nothing but confusion. what is the purpose of this negotiation? do we want to get him? if we do, he is RFA so we have to make the deal more difficult for knicks to match. if not, we should look at other resouces to fill our pg position.

how can we make it worth New York's while not to match? can't ship them our TO pick or our Dallas pick. What about giving them the rights to Llull? It would just feel wrong to have started the season with 3 outstanding PGs only to have lost all 3 (two of them for absolutely nothing).

Can't really do anything. Not allowed to provide incentives for a team to not match.

And we can't do a sign and trade because the Knicks couldn't outright sign Lin to this contract.

since it is not signed yet (of coz you can't sign until 11th of july), anything can be changed. i mean the offer sheet. IFF morey really wants lin, he should redo the offer sheet. i believe lin will be happy to add more $$$$. IFF morey don't care about whether we are getting lin or not, fans here should move on. we are just wasting too mucn time on lin.

maybe that's Morey's plan. Get the Knicks set on matching, and the last minute (the night before the 11th) Lin signs an all-together different offer sheet, throwing the Knicks off guard, and making it hard for them to match.

wishful thinking i know, but i want to keep this kid.

We want to get Lin, if the price is right. Yes, the odds are good that the Knicks will match here, because it's a reasonable deal. But there's a 5% chance (I'm guessing) that Dolan panics and doesn't match, so the Rockets will see what happens. No risk and a possible reward.

This is what you don't seem to get. The Rockets don't care, nor should they, about "filling the PG position" just to have someone there. That's how you get stuck in mediocrity. I don't think the Rockets necessarily want Lin because he's a point guard. I think they see him as a 23-year-old with high upside. Regardless of position, he's the type of player a rebuilding team should have interest in.

I don't think there's a "Plan B" that Morey will immediately move on if the Knicks match. It's not about finding a warm body to throw out there. The Rockets just see Lin as an available young talent, and they gave him a contract they're comfortable with. We'll see what happens.

i guess you're the only one thinking we still have 5%. rox has 0% chance to get lin. with this offer, why not match? this is a real market value for lin. knicks is extremely happy right now.

dragic is another example. he doesn't deserve 8 mil. his market value should be around 6 mil too. lowy is better than him. suns overpaid him but suns had no choice since rox offered 8 mil.

Listening to Charlie P this afternoon, I must have missed this, but he is now saying that the info on the offer for Lin was incorrect, and that the actual official offer for Lin was only 3 years, 19.8 million, and NOT 4 years 30 million.

Big difference, and certainly no longer can people say we should have just given that same money to Goran.

Still don't know what the logic of that offer was though, they had to know NYK would match without blinking.

Unless this was really about sowing the seeds of trouble for NY three years down the road, capwise.
