Another Howard Thread: Give the "rental" talk a rest

Give the "rental" talk a rest.

I (like everyone else) have no clue if Howard would stay, but every thread I read that has even the slightest relation to a possible Howard trade is littered with members chiming in with thoughtless responses of "OMFGROFLOL all that for a rental!!??" I would much rather read your thoughts that have some substance to them.

It's just crazy how people talk like they are 100% sure it will be a rental.

    The way I see it:

The Magic already called his bluff once. If he was really willing to leave money on the table he would have never waived his opt-out. I think they'd call his bluff again if he didn't already embarrass himself and everyone involved; they are sick of him. He is just trying to have his cake (max extension/money) and eat it too (team of his choice). Bottom line is, they are calling the shots on the trade it they don't want to cave 100% on both they don't have to then he is forced to choose one or the other.

Besides, even if we knew it was a rental, I'd still do it. If he stays, great - we have a superstar. If not, we are bottom of the league and can start rebuilding in earnest.

I know it sucks having a team that only wins 20 games a year, but I'll take that with a chance at hitting the lottery over 3 years at 9th place with no chance of a championship in sight.

Most of the great Rockets teams have been via the draft. The Twin Towers and Yao Ming being prime examples. So, I'm sticking with the contents of my sig below.

I would love to hear your (non-canned) thoughts on the matter.

Yeah i think its safe enough to go all in for him at this point. I posted this in another thread, and there is just no way orlando can turn this down. Nobody else could give a better package without an extension

See if can we send orlando and cut just the right amount of players we can take howard and hedo while keeping scola, i'm sure this would be ideal for orlando.

    We Cut : G.Smith - J.Lueur - J.Brockman - C.Fortson - D.Simpson

    We trade: K.Martin - P.Patterson - M.Morris - C.Parsons

Magic trades : D.Howard - H.Turkoglu - While giving them the rights to any rookies/picks they want would work.

Just NO way they can turn that down and at this point i'm willing to take that chance.

I don't understand this mentality. It's hard to predict what they really want at this point.

You guys are forgetting that other teams can trade much better chips than the Rockets can. For some reason, the Rockets fans always believes that our trading assets are so valuable but to other teams, they're not that special. The Rockets have no stars to trade, no high draft picks to trade... You guys are overvaluing our players and picks way too much.

If the Rockets get Howard, I think he will sign here for an extension he has already blinked once which to me says he wants max money more than anything else.

That being said, Morey does not fill you with confidence that he can get it done.

    Agreed Margrave.

I'm not saying that we have the best offer, thats up to their new GM to determine. I'm just saying rental or no rental, I like that we are throwing the kitchen sink at them. We've endured 3 years in a row out of the playoffs with only middle of the round picks to show, what do we have to lose?

We're gonna get him and we're gonna keep him. How we build around him will be the interesting part (but I actually think that will be the easier part, one we're there).

Hey, given the way everything else has seemingly cratered, I'm going to maintain hope that there's still a viable plan.

lakers came out and said they are happy with their core group as is after getting nash, Nets are going after the PF from the bucks instead of dwight now and no other team is willing to rape their roster for him. who is left?

This has to be what they wan't, there not getting an allstar for dwight without an extension. So that trade would save them out right 13 million and then martin is expiring thats 12 mill. So thats 25 million off the books, while getting rid of turkoglu's posion contract. They also get parsons, patterson, morris and martin for a year, plus any picks want - our 2013 - 2015 first rounders, our 2nd rounders, the mavs pick, the grizz picks maybe the suns if we have it? toronto's pick. Then you have any rookies they want white, lamb, donuts, jones, llull, furkan. Thats plenty for dwight without an extension.

Other than the Lakers putting Bynum on the table, who else is looking to deal with one of these 'better chips'?

Could be a leak to drive down the asking price for howard... la wants to ditch world peace and magic im sure dont want the contract... they want bynum more than anything out there so it could be strategy...they probably want a straight swap of peace for rich or just bynum for dwight... orlando wont do that so it feels like manipulation...

That being said... it seems as if we are the only team at the table... which would be a good thing... because if la were to truely back out the price would be cheaper to attain him...

I disagree. I think the way he has played other gms in the past would have been brilliant if we already had our guy to build around. Problem is of course we don't, which complicates things quite a bit.

Last time I'll say it: do not want! Has a bad back, bad attitude, and does not want to be here. I'd much rather watch Camby/Greg Smith/Brockman hustle. Who knows? If Donatus and our draft picks can play, we might not be doomed to mediocrity.

I expect that in a few days, after it sinks in to Camp Dwight that Brooklyn is not happening, it will be leaked out that Dwight will agree to sign an extension if traded to the Lakers. Adidas will throw major pressure/$$$ towards him to go to the Los Angeles market. Then it is game over.

You know... i was actually against going after Dwight until now... only because of J.Lin. Only reason i say this is because of the comments Knicks players made about Lin last year. The guy has all the skills (basketball and non-basketball) to be a leader. If NY ends up not matching HOU's offer, I wouldn't mind the Rockets taking a chance and going all in for Dwight.

I think Lin and Dwight would make a terrific combination together and would complement each other very nicely. Dwight wants the fame and glamour, and Lin wants his teammates to have the glamour, regardless of how well he does.

I'm almost certain it'll cost future draft picks, young'ns (including Lamb, Montie), and expirings. I dont think they'd wanna take on Scola in their rebuilding efforts. But if we can land Dwight, if i'm not mistaken, i think we would still have the capability to sign Courtney Lee due to Bird Rights.

I think this would be a pretty solid squad and something to build around if Dwight decides to stick around and let Morey build around Lin/Dwight. You'll have players that can score, and play defense (other than Scola):

    Lin/Machado
    Lee/??
    Parsons/??
    Scola/??
    Dwight/Asik
