I really enjoyed watching him in Matlock... the few FULL episodes I saw of that show were pure entertainment. He portrayed that character beautifully.

    Que En Paz Descanse.

That sucks. I'm not one to usually get sentimental or even give a **** about a celebrity dying but I liked Andy Griffith. He was a cool old cat. Here's to you Andy.

Wow, what a bummer. The Andy Griffith Show is one of my all time favorites, I could watch them over, and over.

This is very sad. I loved "The Andy Griffith Show" when I was a young kid. In fact, I got my elementary school nickname from this show and the Ron Howard character ("Opie"). I used to wear a lot of Ocean Pacific t-shirts in elementary school. Then, I was a teacher's pet and my teacher started calling me "Opie". True story.

Then, I swear I was addicted to "Matlock". I'm sure I watched every show. Couldn't wait to watch new episodes of this show. Matlock was the man!

It seriously makes me want to cry cause he was a thread in my life from childhood through my teens. He was the best!

Almost all television in the 70s was horrible unwatchable crud, but there were rare exceptions. Andy Griffith was in two of them, both TV movies, one based off a novel.

I recommend both. They pretty much represent the top end of what TV was capable of at that time. One of them (Savages) gave Griffith an opportunity to play way outside his usual image.

He was cool, and gave one of the best acting performances ever in A Face in the Crowd. That's one of the best of any actor since the start of films. He was fantastic.

    RIP

I guess due to his having been in the public eye for so long I thought he was older than 86 and expected this to happen a lot sooner.

People tend to get a little maudlin remembering personalities like this, but he was very wise to get a successful project early on that allowed him to build a career playing people who seemed to reflect his background and values. Although, having watched Faces in the Crowd, I think he had the range to do Oscar or A-list supporting film work: playing Larry Hagman or Ned Beatty type villians in the '70s. I'm a little surprised that Van Patten and Bosley weren't able to capitalize on their brands to the same level that he seemed to.
