Let Yao put on weight, not lift weight

Yao's recent shooting percentage keeps dropping. I think it is the rerult of his lifting weight too much (he is obvious getting more muscles on his arms now). By lifting weight too much, his arm muscles do not grow evenly, thus his arms do not go the same way as before as he throws the ball. Instead, let him put on weight, as heavy as Shaq. Then nobody can push him around easily.
If the team persist on increasing his arm strength, then do it gradually and slowly.

So let me get this straight. You want Yao to gain weight like Shaq?? You do know they've been trying to get Shaq to lose weight, don't you? There are those that say Shaq could've been even more dominating if he hadn't put on so much weight. When he came into the league, he was about 295-300 lbs and was explosive.

    This is just ridiculous.

Instead of gaining weight he needs to increase uppr body strength so he can be a force on the boards and he needs to improve his foot speed. If you get fat, you lose quickness. He needs to improve quickness.

Shaq is at a ridiculous 370 pounds now. I don't think his knee will hold up for much longer if he doesn't lose some weight. But I do agree with the first poster that Yao needs to put on some weight. He is toooo thin.

no way! Yao is already a hefty 300 lbs!!! He weighs more then 90 percent of the centers in the league. The only centers heavier then Yao are sabonis and Shaq (that I can think of). He needs to get stronger and faster. The only reason why Yao gets pushed around so much is that hes no where near as strong as the forwards and centers, maybe not even the guards. Give him the summer to build his strength and we'll see what he can really do.

Yao's original high shooting percentage is the result of many years of training with gradually growing arm muscle strength. If over-lifting weight too soon, his arm force will grow unbalanced and thus his ball throw will go deviated.
I agree Shaq is too heavy, but Yao does need to put on some weight.

whats this based on? Your research on weight lifting effects on shooting percentages? its not like Yao doesn't lift immediately before a game. I've been lifting and my shot has gotten alot better and I have more range too. As long as Yao practices his shooting and has the mechanics down, he should be fine.

No, Yao's orginal High shooting pct was because no one guarded him. Now theyve realized he's actually good, theyre pushing him out of the paint are where he has to take long fallaway jumpshots. Also, as the season wears on, he's getting more tired.

He needs to improve his upper body strength, improve lateral quickness and make an initial quick step to the basket, and improve his stamina.

Yao Ming is NOT doing heavy lifting right now. He is lifting as part of his strength and conditioning regimen, and he is becoming more toned because of that, but the goal of that work is to increase his durability and flexibility. After the season, he and the organization will decide where (if anywhere) Yao needs a significant increase in muscle mass, and create a lifting regimen to accomplish those goals.

His decreasing field goal percentage is due to a combination of factors. The main one is simply that this is his second and third time to meet teams. They are catching up to his moves. Time to show some different moves, and make some counter moves.

Exactly. The Warriors countered several of his "usual" moves perfectly. They had them defensed because they had seen them before.

I cannot agree that is the excuse. Yao is capable of making continuous spins and moves to get around his defender. The defender cannot predict too many moves of Yao, if he does predict the first one or two moves.

Then WHY isn't Yao doing that? We see those moves from him about once every 3 games.

Perhaps Rudy does not want him to be the major scorer?? Who knows.

Yao has not played like that recently. His recent highlights are fancy passing, not fancy scoring.

Yao Ming needs to gain STRENGTH with as little increase in body mass as possible(Weight). His arms, shoulders and abdomen are in need of greater strength.

Ummmm... Shaq is going to retire in probably no more than 5 years and Yao is supposed to put on weight? Is Yao supposed to change his body for just one player? He's heavy enough for just about everyone else. Yao just needs to be a bit more aggressive and work harder. Kinds of like Cato who's some 30 lbs lighter. Although he's quite a bit stronger.
