www.bskball.com reports: Damon Stoudamire has been pushing for a trade out of Portland, according to a league source. The Blazers were rumored to be willing to offload Damon for salary cap reasons, with the addition of Dale Davis the Blazers could be facing Luxury Tax payments of $20-30 million. As Damon is not much in the scheme of thing, is the Blazers can off load his contract and reduce what they take back that would reduce what they pay to the league. As is stands now, almost uniformly the league will face a tax on teams that over spend. The threshold for the tax appears to be $54 million, teams with a payroll in excess of that number will have to pay a dollar for dollar tax on the amount over the threshold. So if a team like the Lakers, who are committed to roughly $60 million in the 1st tax year, would have to not only pay $60 million in salary to the players, they'd also have to pay the league $6 million as a tax, bringing their total player cost to $66 million. Portland looks to have $82.9 million committed to salary this season, and roughly $75.5 million in the first year of the tax, meaning Portland would pay $21.5 million in tax, and have a total player expense of $97 million. If they can off load Damon and his roughly $10 million in salary, they would reduce what they'd pay total to $77 million. So as you can see Portland has 20 million reasons to move Damon. If the Blazers are willing, the Rockets could obtain Damon for (theorically) the exception, and 2 #1's, and Drew, plus others if necessary. Then turn around and send Damon to GS for Antwain, Dampair, and anything else to make this trade work. Any CONSTRUCTIVE thought??? ------------------ Life is but a dream
Dang, all i'm saying is we coulda used him a few years ago.. but..Toronto screwed us on that one. our PG worries are over with stevie franchise. =) -elie17 portland already helped us get rid of pippen, but the NBA is a business and no one has to return favors. =) ------------------ Oh.. so this is how you add a signature huh? coo coo.
NO WAY!!! Why would we help out Portland by giving them 2 first round picks for their over-paid PG that we would have to take less value for from another team. No offense, but that is a horrible idea. ------------------ I am the founding member of the Butt-Nekkid Party! White House here we come!
Well the article does suggest us not keeping damon but trading him for antwain jamison. Basically, what this would boil down to would be us trading away 2 future number 1 picks and a scrub or tow for antwoine jamison, which , depending on the number 1's, obvioulsy not ours and probably not milwaukees, is a pretty good trade for the rockets. ------------------ Remember.... You are not really drunk until you must hold on to the grass to keep from falling off the earth.
see, bskball.com obviously don't think things through very well.... look at the Golden State for example; at PG they have Mookie Blaylock and Vonteego Cummings. It's going to be hard enough for them to find enough time at the PG spot for those 2 guys this year without throwing Damon Stoudamire into the mix. Oh, did I forget to mention that Larry Hughes and Bob Sura are creating a logjam at the 2? Just as well Sura can spend minutes at the PG spot... oh wait... The state do NOT need another guard in any way shape OR form! They need a center pretty badly, and I'd go so far as to suggest that they probably need a PF as well-depends on how Fortson goes, but I think he'll get used as a 6'7 PF in a conference of taller, quicker PF's. Maybe involving a different team would be nice... Of course, that's assuming that Paul Allen even CARES that he has to pay a luxury tax... the guy IS loaded in a massive way!!! ------------------
This would be a good trade if the Rockets could find an ideal suitor for Damon. Rockets would give up what? Drew, picks for someone good *like* Jamison? I agree with Dr N though. I see no reason why GS would do this deal, so the dumping of Stoudamire would have to be with another team. But why would Paul Allen actually care about paying money now? ------------------ I am so exasperated that I could expectorate.
New York could use Damon, so maybe GState would be interested in a package including Camby. And Portland probably wouldn't want the exception, but the only way to reduce payroll would be by taking in less salary, something our trade exception could help them do. ------------------
I don't know. Damon might want out of Portland and they might be wanting to get rid of him as well, but I don't see them giving him up for those scrubs. I mean, Pippen completely destroyed our leverage, yet we got a few good players out of that deal. Face it, Drew is complete garbage compared to Damon. No way they'll just give him away for the sake of saving a few million. This is the richest owner in the NBA we're talking about here. ------------------ Nederland 2002 Qualifying Campaign (Damn those penalties!!!) Does anybody know when the luxury tax takes effect? ------------------ I'm not clumsy, I just have to know my surroundings.
First of all I'll just reinterate what people have already said: 1. I can't think of a single rumor off of bskball.com that actually happened (except the ones that they picked up after they had been reported by other sources). 2. Paul Allen isn't going to dump talent just to save $10M. Now here's some new stuff: -Damon Stoudamire made $10.1M last year - Bryce Drew made $1.1M last year. - Draft picks count nothing for salary in trades - That means that the Houston side of the deal is some $7.6M short of making this deal doable. - The portion of the trade exception that we accrued from the Francis trade should have expired on Aug. 27th. - That means that we should have only the portion of the trade exception that we got from the Pippen trade. Since Pippen made $14.5M when we traded him, then our trade exception is worth, at most, $2.1M (15% of Pippen's salary). - So, even if we used the remaining portion of the exception, we'd be some $5.5M short of making the deal work. - More importantly, if Portland made the deal it would only free up $3.45M in cap space. - Including luxury tax, Portland would only save $6.9M, not $20M. - $6.9M is tip money for Paul Allen and hardly worth giving up his starting point guard for. ------------------
From what I have read, the luxury tax kicks in at the end of this season. Also, the CBA has a 10% kickback clause that goes into effect this season (players giving back 10% under certain conditions). ------------------ GATER [This message has been edited by GATER (edited September 04, 2000).]
Portland helped the Rockets when they took Pippen off their hands. I really don't see a team that would want to go through the Rockets to get Stoudamire. The trade exception might tempt some teams but I thought I read a post earlier that part of it's value had decreased. ------------------
Maybe things are a little slow for the sports writers - too early for the World Series and the Olympics.....college and NFL just starting......can't imagine billionaire Paul Allen cares much about the luxury tax. He's filling the Rose Garden and he's winning. Maybe he thinks he can upgrade Stoudamire THIS season. Now that's something I find believable considering the changes they have made in the last 2 years. ------------------ GATER
The Luxury Tax begins next seasons---providing revenue does not drastically increase, which it could..... The escrow tax (10% withholding) starts this season on all NBA salary. "see, bskball.com obviously don't think things through very well...." **** The comments your making, are not based on thing said or implied by me...They are comments about things said by the poster of the data on this site....Rocketman2000 1. I can't think of a single rumor off of bskball.com that actually happened (except the ones that they picked up after they had been reported by other sources). **** Thats funny...I can name about 3 dozen deals that I had in their entirety or significant pieces. I had the Steve Smith/ JR Rider swap before anyone else. I had Eddie Jones to Charlotte before anyone else. I had Stephon Marbury to New Jersey before anyone...... I just haven't hit anything major this year, because there is so much clutter out there.... I did have Matt Harpring out of Orlando in April..... I did have Dee Brown in Orlando in April... 2. Paul Allen isn't going to dump talent just to save $10M. **** Paul spends money to make money...If Damon is a problem Damon will be dealt...if the second part of the deal reduces what's spent, than that's a plus----Damon doesn't get dealt simply because of money...Damon gets dealt because he is a problem within the team, and his salary and ego require him to play too many minutes. ------------------
Some of you are missing my point. It's a bad deal because we would be helping out Portland greatly by taking such a huge salary off their hands and giving them 2 mid-range 1st round picks. Anyway, thank god this is just a suggestion and not something the team is considering. ------------------ I am the founding member of the Butt-Nekkid Party! White House here we come!
Dammit outlaw! Don't give them any ideas!! ------------------ I am the founding member of the Butt-Nekkid Party! White House here we come!

I did have Matt Harpring out of Orlando in April..... I did have Dee Brown in Orlando in April... Sure you did. Sorry, if I doubt your word on this, but there's been too much flat out wrong information on bskball.com for me to put any stock in anything reported there. It might be helpful if you guys actually checked to see if the rumors that you report could come close to working salary wise. I guess the report that Houston was finalizing a deal for Ray Allen is what changed my opinion of the site from just bad to laughable. Paul spends money to make money...If Damon is a problem Damon will be dealt...if the second part of the deal reduces what's spent, than that's a plus----Damon doesn't get dealt simply because of money...Damon gets dealt because he is a problem within the team, and his salary and ego require him to play too many minutes Paul Allen throws away money all the time with no intention of making money. Have you ever heard of the Experience Music Project? Do you think that he's going to make any money on his initial $250M investment? How would Stoudamire's salary be a factor in the amount of minutes that he plays? Paul Allen has never had a problem eating salary in order to better the team. He paid Jermaine O'Neil to sit on the bench and he agreed to pay most of the remainder of Kenny Anderson's contract in order to get Stoudamire. So, now he's going to prevent Dunleavy from cutting Stoudamire's minutes because he's making the max? ------------------
Sure you did. Sorry, if I doubt your word on this, **** But seeing as you obviously want to discredit me this way, you haven't done the necessary research to say everything contained in the RUMOR MILL is not true.... You are taking one subject poor one story that did not occur and saying that makes the bulk of the information wrong..... Your the one that's wrong... It takes a lot to make a deal go down, and typically as soon as it goes public it becomes harder to do but there's been too much flat out wrong information on bskball.com for me to put any stock in anything reported there. **** Compared to any other media outlet that covers rumors my average is LEAPS AND BOUNDS higher than NBAtalk, the NY Post, The Houston Chronicle, Clutchcity (when it was .com or .net)...as far as individual analysts..... I am significantly more accurate than Steven A. Smith, David Aldridge, Mitch Lawrence, and beyond the draft---I destroy Pete Vecsey It might be helpful if you guys actually checked to see if the rumors that you report could come close to working salary wise. ***** It might be helpful, if you had a clue what your talking about...more times than not I am telling why deals won't work because of the cap. I spend more time and space educating you on the cap with the help of the best NBA cap guys on the net. I own a copy of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and have read it cover to cover---have you?..... You need to understand that if two teams want to make a deal there is always away.... I am always mindful of what works under the cap, and what's allowable by the league, but you need to understand the exact details of a deal are never leaked....They start with the big players and then factor in lesser players to make it work... I am generally privileged to the bigger name guys, but the exact methods the teams will use to get it under the cap are generally not discussed ------------------
First of all, I check bskball every day. I really like reading all the rumors. However, I can't agree that your analysis is any better than the guys you mentioned. I can't say it's worse either. All analysts have had their good and bad points. And Pete Vescey, Steve A. Smith, etc all can do one thing you can't: use correct grammar, punctuation, etc. It is pretty confusing reading some of your rumors because sentences begin and end in totally wrong places. Also, your site doesn't even compare to ClutchCity. Y'all do different things, you report every rumor you see, while CC reports things that come from reliable sources only. And the final advantage CC.net has over bskball.com: NO ADS! ------------------
hmmm, what is a rumor? - a report of uncertain origin or accuracy; hearsay. Why would MOST of the information in that section be true? It's just something to get people talking. whoa, whoa, whoa. While I certainly don't view Bskball.com the bastion of misinformation, there is no way that your site anyway compares to the accuracy contained in Clutchcity.NET. At least as far as the Rockets are concerned. And as far as those analysts you mentioned, big deal. They are rumor mongers paid to stir controversey. It might be helpful if YOU knew what you were talking about Bskball. Aelliot knows the cap. A LOT of his posts help clear up confusion on the board about salary cap questions and the CBA. Why don't you try to address Aelliots original points about how this deal won't work instead of puffing out your chest. I really don't see how this deal will work, and come to think of it, this seems like a little rehash of a certain popeye rumor, with a twist. ------------------ I am so exasperated that I could expectorate.
