In a world where Hasheem Thabeets, Adam Morrisons, Darko Milicics and Yi Jianlians exist, I can't for the life of me figure out why a lot of you would rather pass on the best Center in the NBA. He might leave, but then we can try for great lottery picks. I'll take the sure thing any day.

Dude, I really thought that Adam Morrison was going to the REAL DEAL, Bird-Light.

    Anyway, yes please to Dwight.

but then this doomed thought creeped up to my mind .... we simply could have lost another 5 games and we'd already be here........

I love the fact Dalembert is gone but with all the talk of teams needing centers and probably moving into top 10 with him I'm not so sure the 14th pick was necessary. Still good trade, no more 14th indeed!

Turns out the Rockets also gave up a future second round pick and cash considerations. Me no likey. Hope we still have enough cash to buy a second rounder this year.

It's a future 2nd rounder. Sometimes these things are 3 years off and protected out the wazoo. Probably not a big deal. If it's just like, next season's unprotected 2nd rounder I'm not a big fan of that, but otherwise I don't really mind.

That was brought up in another thread. Rockets2K said they still can buy a pick. It wasnt refuted by resident transactions advisor Bimathug

Thanks. I missed that. If we still got $1.5M left I'm guessing we could still buy a 2nd rounder in the 40s.

I don't know if "buying a 2nd round pick" is even that much of an concern for the team. If losing out on buying, say, draft rights to, say, Furkan Aldemir of Turkey is the difference between landing Dwight Howard and narrowly missing out, Aldemir can Furkan himself.

At "worst", it's a 2014 second rounder. At "best", it's really nothing.

The Rockets traded their 2012 second rounder to Detroit in the trade to acquire the draft rights to Chase Budinger.

The Rockets also traded their (top-40 protected) 2013 second rounder to Atlanta for the draft rights to David Andersen. The protections run through 2016, I believe; although I certainly hope the Rockets aren't a bottom-10 team for the next 3-4 years.

Here's hoping that THIS is what the "future second rounder" is:

To make the trade work FOR MILWAUKEE, the Bucks had to aggregate the salaries of Livingston, Brockman and Leuer to reach the minimum required outgoing salary for matching purposes.

However, such matching was not required for the trade to work FOR HOUSTON.

It's possible that the Rockets chose to view this trade as multiple separate and distinct trades from their perspective. This would help maximize the amount of the trade exception they receive for Dalembert. They might have needed some nominal consideration to exchange in one of the perceived separate trades. If so, then the future second rounder could be top-55 protected, many years in the future, and is extinguished if the pick ends up being in the top 55 picks.

    Just a thought.

What is this sure thing ??

We have a shot at some great lottery picks now, even better if we manage to move up some more .. Gambling on Howard is far from any kind of "sure thing" ...We could fail miserably and take us another 3 years to just get back to this point.

Let's stop all the guaranty stuff. There are risks EVERYWHERE. In every possible alternative, there are risks.

    Dream big anyway.

Bima, I like your TPE scenario and I hope that we indeed traded nothing but a top-55 protected second rounder, but there's also a chance that we traded the other portion (30-40) of the pick we sent to Atlanta.

Don't think Morey would give up a center unless he was sure we were getting one back in return.

Yeah, the #12 pick should be high enough to get either Tyler Zeller or Meyers Leonard. ;)

Exactly my thought. This is why I think Drummond or Dwight will be a Rocket by this time tonight.

Good point. Since Leuer is a minimum player, he could be traded by himself for the 2nd round pick. Then Brockman+Livingston for Dalembert would yield the Rockets a 2.5m trade exception. If the Rockets had a 1m trade exception to use for Brockman, that would become a 3.5m trade exception.

Interestingly, the Rockets have a nominal trade exception from the Chase Budinger deal. ESPN has Budinger's salary at 844K, Shamsports at 854K, and Hoopshype at 894K. The trade exception allows you an additional 100K buffer, meaning the Rockets could acquire a player with a salary up to $944-984.4K. Annoyingly close to Brockman's 1m salary, but not quite enough, unless Brockman's figure is a few % off.
