I want to enroll in grad school next year at UH and I need to take the GRE. Who has the best guide to prepare for the test? Any tips? How long should I prepare myself for?
I would focus more on the math as presented through GRE practice materials; took it in March cold had about a 25% differential between that and verbal. I think if you can draft essays, formulate arguments and don't get blindsided with tricky topics on your two essays, you can handle the writing; and the verbal is just a tougher version of the SAT passage analysis.
I know I can definitely do well on the math portion, but I still need to practice for this portion since I haven't done any calculus in a few years. I'll be applying for the engineering school so I know I need to get higher than a 700. As far as the verbal and writing, I'm confident on the writing portion, the only portion I might not be so confident is verbal. Any tips on how to study for the verbal section?
Just took the GRE today. I didn't have much time to prepare, but UT has some high requirements and I used the Barron's New GRE guide, very helpful. After taking the test, I can say it is a true depiction of the exam format and material. I only studied for a week and got a very good score. Focus on math, and study verbal strategies and some vocabulary if you aren't strong. Good luck. Moe
Sweet, will look into getting it. If you feel it helped you then I am sure it can help me. I definitely need to prepare so I can take it soon. I am thinking about applying at UH for the Spring semester so my deadline is September 1. Do you usually need your GRE scores before applying?
