Charlotte wins big here and this is a sign that Charlotte management understands that the way to build a roster is through the draft. The pick is lottery-protected in 2013, top eight protected in 2014, top one protected in 2015, and unprotected in 2016. As Detroit has been one of the league's most mismanaged teams over the past several years under Joe Dumars, it's a very safe bet that Charlotte gets a pick in the 9-12 range in 2014, and that's your likely worst case scenario. Detroit is so badly managed under Dumars that the pick could very easily wind up being in the 2-7 range in 2015. Anything Charlotte gets out of Ben Gordon, who is only under contract for one more year than Corey Maggette, is gravy. Further, what is the point of acquiring 2013 cap space if you're managed by Joe Dumars? Remember what happened the last time Dumars had a bunch of cap space? I do. He blew it all on Charlie Villanueva and, that's right, Ben Gordon. The addition of Gordon has zero impact on what Charlotte does with its #2 overall pick as Gordon is not going to be on the roster by July 2014. If Charlotte likes Bradley Beal more than they like everybody else, they'll draft Beal.
Charlotte not doing anything with their salary anyways. I respect Rich Cho and expect Charlotte to be on the upswing in the next year or two. Detroit on the other hand is run by a lazy GM with total job security. Dumars might have been good at one point, but now he just mails it in. If they saved money he'll probably just go blow it off on the next almost-star looking to get paid (Ty Lawson? Brandon Jennings? Tyreke Evans??!).
Fit doesn't matter in the slightest; right now the only thing Charlotte should be concerned about is getting additional picks and youth so they can start building some semblance of a core. Gordon isn't going to be around for very long anyway, just bench him if he doesn't fit and pull off another of these deals next year, get another pick, and continue stockpiling.
its pretty obvious to me that they will look to trade that pick. I think there is a good possibility they can get an established player for that pick. Teams would probably rather deal with Sacramento, Portland, and Toronto for their picks since the cost wont be as high and they can still get a high calliber player so I dont think they will be able to get a star with that pick, but probably a couple established players.
To be fair, Detrioy dumped $15 million. That is a lot of money. Most likely Bobcats gives that pick in 2014 with the pick being 9th to 14th or so. But it is still possible for this to really get bad.
Maggette is making almost the same amount of $ as Ben Gordon next year...Unless they really need that $8-900,000 to become relevant again
detroit will be a playoff team in a couple of years, possibly next year knight/bynum stuckey/maggete prince/daye henson/maxiell monroe/jerebko monroe is gonna take another big step, henson will add shot blocking and defense in the frount cout, knight will take another step.
Detroit started last season 4-20. They were a .500 team after that though. They improved a ton. Playoffs next year is not too much to ask. They'll amnesty Charlie V at some point and have a ton of cap room after this season. It's a gamble of a trade but it's not necessarily a bad one.
Gordon + 1 additional year at $13.2 million (player option) and protected 1st < Maggette. I think it is a terrible protection, but what do you expect when talking $13 million. This just shows how much the Wiz got ripped off in the last trade.
Detroit has some really nice young players I wanna see the Wizards, Pistons, and Cavs be relevant again Oh god a Heat vs. Cavs first round series would pull in crazy ratings
I don't mean salary for this season ... they get salary off the books sooner. Maggette is done in 2013 while Gordon is on the hook until 2014. I see now why Charlotte did it... could be a very smart move. Seems to be some urgency now for Detroit to make the postseason this coming season.
It's actually not a bad move for either team. Salary dump for Detroit, while Charlotte improves slightly talent wise. Charlotte will either draft Gilchrist or Robinson, or simply trade down a few spots. That #2 probably could be had by Cleveland or Portland. Enough picks and a veteran player.
me too! I would love to see that. the cavs, I believe are still 1 year or two away. the pistons and wizards might be able to sneak in next year. I'm definitely rooting for detroit and cleveland though
