From time to time Elton gets some bad rep from being gay and all. But hey, even Billy Joel has a song for that.

Elton, and not even close. Joel has nothing in his discography to compete with Elton's first several albums:

    Empty Sky (1969)
    Elton John (1970)
    Tumbleweed Connection (1970)
    Madman Across the Water (1971)
    Honky Château (1972)
Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player (1973)
    Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973)

Any one of these albums dwarfs Billy Joel (no pun intended).

Granted, Elton hasn't done much since...

I would add Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975) to that. I'd say it's better than Don't Shoot Me.

He has plenty of singles after that that are elite as well (Don't Go Breakin My Heart, Sad Songs..., I Guess the Blues, etc).

Can't stand either one, but if I had to choose, it'd be Elton John. But I chose that I hate both of them.

It's Elton for me overall, but my favorite track from either guy is actually Joel's "Movin Out."

Elton at his best blows Billy Joel away.. Elton has become very commercial though.

Easily Elton John, at least easy for me. With Bernie Taupin writing the lyrics, he managed to crank out some of my favorite songs, and I would put him ahead of Joel just for Tiny Dancer, even if that was the only song on Elton's side of the ledger. I like Billy Joel a lot, and have seen both of the cats in concert many times over the years, but if I have to chose, I have to pick Mr. John.

Check the one-hand-behind-the-back action at 4:44. Guy is unbelievable.

Hard to put one in front of another...both are monsters of their craft.

The rock & roll side of me would vote of Joel.

The writer side of me would vote of Elton.

Since I fancy myself more of a writer, final answer: Elton John.

But then, as a musician I play Joel.

    Okay, I'm confused.....

Elton John. No contest. Billy Joel stuff are good but not as memorable or classic like Elton. Off the top of my head I can only pick out like 3 Billy Joel songs but more than 10 Elton songs.

I'd rather vote for Jackson Browne, but since he isn't on the "pole", I'll go with Elton. Growing up in the 70s, you couldnt go more than 30 minutes without hearing one of his classics on the radio.
