I am in the process of renting a place inside the loop (right off Newcastle & Westpark). They are supposed to be luxury apartments with some income restriction, pretty much can't live here if you make less than $40k a year. A 1 bed-1 bath here will run you $1250 a month!!! However, I know that Houston is pretty much a crime hot-bed and I know apartments have it worse probably than most other places, so I do not want to be suckered into a year long lease without knowing at least something about the crime history of this place. Is there any way I can request or get such info from the police department in the area? How do I go about doing this? I am also concerned because the place, as expensive as it seems, still has pretty horrid ratings on apartmentratings.com (around 34%). Granted, most cite an unfriendly staff but there were a few mentions of break-ins also (which I guess no apartment complex has none of).

I would love to live in a loft-style apartment instead since they are presumably safer places to live with more controlled access, but that would run me I am guessing no less than $1400 a month for the same size apartment (about 900 sq ft).

Any tips on what to look for? I am officially leaving the 'burbs behind and moving into the Big City.

That place is right next to an electrical substation, an oil storage facility, two major freeways, and Gulfton. Sounds lovely.

Go down Wesleyan towards San Felipe. That's the area you want to live in at that price point. It's much safer, quieter, and nicer. I'm not trying to sway you, but if you're worried about crime it's something to consider. Those condos of Timmons always have openings and there's tons of apartments in Afton Oaks.

Also, what ever happened with the thread with the guy with the neighbor that was suspectedly stealing his gas from a gas can?

If you are worried about crime, then don't leave the suburbs.

Sure, but keep in mind it's technically in the West U/Bellaire area of town, and there are three other apartments around here all of which are pretty expensive where a 1 bed-1 bath will run you easily over $1100 no matter how small it is. All have income restrictions. Certainly does not mean zero crimes but then again River Oaks and West U probably have as much crime as Sharpstown. It is the nature of this town we call Houston, and it is why our city sucks balls. All these neighborhoods are 3-5 miles apart!

Oh, and it is not in the Gulfton 'hood, and I think immediate freeway access is a big advantage not a negative, note that most expensive lofts are located directly on a major freeway.

Unfortunately even the burbs have not escaped the crime wave in Houston. I was in Pearland Town Center the other day shopping at Dillard's, and I had the pleasure of witnessing a robbery in progress, during day time, with a bunch of security cars and a police station in the store's immediate vicinities. It was a couple of kids who stole a bunch of expensive hand bags and ran off with it, with a getaway car waiting for them right outside the store entrance. When I wondered out loud to the store clerk as to why they didn't have security on every entrance, she said it was an on-going issue and that it has happened no less than 10 times in the last year alone! If you happen to be in the Town Center after 9pm, then be very careful because there are a bunch of thugs/gangstas driving or roaming around doing a little bit of 'scouting' to wrap up an honest day's work.

Any specific luxury apartments/condos/lofts that you would suggest? Frankly I am not interested in paying $1400 for a 1 bed-1 bath flat, if so then I might as well look into buying a place, that is mortgage territory.

One thing that definitely concerns me, is this strange ass cable provider they use:

Is there a way to force them to comply with this supposed FCC ruling? I would love to find a way to go with Comcast or Uverse service, this company Ygnition sounds very sketchy!

This place seemed pretty legit for an entry-level luxury apartment.

    http://www.3333weslayan.com/

Had nice hardwoods, granite countertops, very nice kitchen and patio to boot. Though I am certain they were asking for something around that $1400 range. Right next to a BWW, grocery store and the whole shabang.

You have the right to request a police report on anything.. Just call one of those private investigators, they'll help you...
