We have something in common! I don't eat seafood either. In Fact only eat the 4 main meats: Pork, Turkey, Chicken and Beef I have eaten tuna sandwhich but it is not my preference I am not allergic or anything .. . don't care for the aftertaste Rocket River
After taste with seafood could mean you are eating poor quality or older stuff. I usually tell people who hate seafood to try eating something fresh and made well and see if they like it. Make sure to go to someplace good. A lot of restaurants in texas serve terrible seafood. Eat a fish in Hawaii!
Raw cilantro is one of the nastiest things i've tasted -- cooked in limited doses it's fine, but when they heap a bunch on your meal I have a problem.
When you don't like eating something, it could be your body trying to send a message. Perhaps you get enough of the nutrients you need from your diet and by eating the coriander it boosts some quantity to unhealthy levels. Or it could be mild allergies acting up (e.g. eating carrots makes my throat itch which I didn't realize was a mild allergy for years). In these cases you obviously don't want to force the issue. If it's just a taste thing, then it's just a phase - you'll like it at some point in the future. Edit: if you're gagging then don't force yourself to eat it - you probably don't need it
I might be wrong but I believe closed minded people tend to have that "gag" reflex on certain foods. Its about the way they are wired...
Untill 3-4 years ago I was a very picky eater. No tomatoes, onions, seafood, sushi, almost any veggie, etc etc I had a co-worker who I traveled with and he would try any food with a completely naive and open minded attitude. He would put a bite of food in his mouth and then ask what it was. I was fascinated by that. So, I began just eating food and ignoring and preconceived notion I had. I tried to be as objective as possible and just eat it and try to analyze the flavor. Now I eat and enjoy pretty much all food. I'm still not a huge raw red onion fan, but I like it selective dishes.
Not sure if there is a specific way to train yourself to eat certain foods but I know what you mean. I used to hate broccoli, pickles, and boiled eggs (only boiled) but now I can consume them a lot easier. Still don't necessarily like them, but I can tolerate them after eating them more frequently. Before, I would have some gag-like reflexes to those foods. Maybe eating them in very small quantities on multiple occasions will lessen your distaste or eating them with water/drinks. ... Why are you bringing that crap in here? This is the hangout and even then, personal insults just show immaturity. You are worsening the image of Muslims anyway...
I have been completely freaked out by shrooms since I was a kid. I hate the texture, I don't see their point. They either taste like earth or they absorb the flavor of the food they are cooked with. So basically you get mushrooms with steak because they will taste like steak? I'll just get a bigger steak, thank you. However, I'm starting to like truffles as I have been more or less had them forced upon me whenever I go out for corporate dinners. I started with truffle mashed potatoes, truffle and lobster mac and cheese, and worked my way to actually liking truffle oil. However....you dont SEE the truffles. I think that's the difference. I am thinking that slowly I might be able to work myself into eating a mushroom at some point in the next 10 years. Maybe. Definitely a 1st world problem: I hate/fear mushrooms, but like truffles. (Pass the 2001 Canalicchio di Sopra please...)
When I was younger, Dr. Pepper was one of my favorite soft drinks, now it just tastes like medicine to me. I can't stand it. Oh, and I hate mayonnaise. IMO burgers are better with just mustard.
I hate most seafood. Fish and shrimp especially. I think it's something you're either born with or not. Sometimes I'm like, my taste buds ain't lying this food's whack. What's wrong with these people. /Russel Peters tone Oh, I forgot mayo. Pepperoni gives me heartburn.
I hate fish, though I do like crawfish, lobsters, shrims, and other stuffs that comes in a shell. Not fish with fins and stuff. I also don't like Japanese food. I ate at Todai (marq*e center) way back then in middle school, threw up like a beech and never liked Japanese food since. Maaaybe I'll enjoy a good udon once in a while, but none of that sushi crap. Dr Pepper is an acquired taste. I hated it at first but after a while I couldn't get enough of it. I don't drink soda now anyways. and bean sprouts make me sick. and soy milk. and ginger. and i don't like cake (as in birthday cakes and all that).
It depends. I think oftentimes it's Gewöhnungssache (a thing of habituation?), but I do believe that certain food just does not taste good to certain people. I, for one, eat very healthy. No refined foods. No fast food. No sweats. No soda. No bacon. No cheese. Lots of vegetables & fruits. Some beef. Lots of fish/seafood. And all the good carb sources that are out there. My little sister used to eat all kinds of crap. She basically didn't like any of the stuff I eat. Until she broke her leg and got fat. Well, not fat, but a little chubby. So I told her I was going to do work out with her, but that in order for it to be effective, she had to change her diet. And she did. She's on the good side now. I've 'converted' a few buddies of mine, an ex girl friend of mine, as well as my mom. Stuff that I used to love as a kid like ice cream, cake or fries taste like **** now, because you're not used to it (the loads of fat, sugar and salt) anymore. Now, I'm not saying this is the case with you at all and as I mentioned before some people simply don't like the taste of certain foods (I hate the taste of sauerkraut and lamb for example), but I do think you can get used to most foods/a different diet. Maybe try to flavor it with something you really like or add some other ingredients you enjoy eating. Maybe it's just not for you though.
Hating seafood and cilantro must mean Houston Texas is damn near hell for you. Some of the best seafood and cilantro flavored dishes around.
Completely agree with you and the OP on this one. When cilantro is prominently featured in something I'm eating, it's all I can taste.
Cheese. How anybody eats this crap is beyond me. Eggs. I can eat them but only in the presence of meat (ex. Bacon, sausage, ham, steak, chicken, etc.).
Your co-worker sounds like me. Traveling the world on business expanded my palate to dimensions I never dreamed of. My request when extreme foods were involved was that someone native to the country eat the same thing immediately before I did. On the home front, the only things that come to mind are beets, radishes, and triggerfish. Also, starting about 5 years ago, eating guacamole and avocado makes me nauseous.
I can tolerate most food and I'll try almost anything. The only thing I usually refuse to eat is celery. I hate the taste, hate the texture, and find it is the tool of an amateur chef. Its a filler food, nothing more.
