Connelly's News Hostage stuff is hilarious, but this article is typical of Houston's "alternative" press. Given that they are supported by topless clubs and a big conglomerate that sells other rags such as the press around the country, they don't have much room to talk. Every big city needs a weak attempt at the Village Voice and the Press is ours. I love Connelly's writing, but this is just a way for the paper better known in Houston for "Height/Weight proportionate BiWFDDF seeks same for friendship, poetry and maybe more" to appeal to their loyal reader and to take a pot shot at the hated Houston Chronicle, who they consider a rival even if the Chron, when asked about the Press, responds with a resounding, "Who?"
I for one do not think they were trying to get Yao Ming last year. They ended up with the 5th worst record, they just lucked out by getting him. Not sure where the writer got that from.
