Skate Legend Christian Hosoi has a book coming out next month and you can read the forward (by Tony Hawk) and the first chapter here:

should be a good read - I've talked to Hosoi a few times on the phone and he really seems to be a good guy nowadays. Very friendly and accommodating person. His story of Star/legend turned druggie burnout turned inmate turned pastor is a very good story.

The book will probably be similar to the documentary on him that came out several years ago -

    no telling.

I think the fact that he was diagnosed as bi-polar explains a lot though.
he's up for parole in 2018 - though he'll probably never make parole as long as his victims family keeps showing up at his parole hearings. I do wonder if Hosoi ever talks to Gator.

I was a pretty little kid when all this was going on -- I never realized that Hosoi was so involved in drugs. Hawk and Hosoi were definitely my favorite skaters though.

I'd like to use this opportunity to educate you "old school" skaters on some new ish...lol.

I'd just like to show that the new generation of skaters are quite innovative too, this benefit contest was filmed recently and is quite impressive (most of these kids are under 21 and amateur).

Includes a 540 down a set of stairs with no ramp assistance.

Yeah, we have no idea what the kids are pulling these days.

In honor of your post here is 40+ year old Rodney Mullen killing it...

I see that they're taking the 'addiction is a disease' angle. (1:17)

I don't want to sidetrack this thread, but looking at it that way gives every addict an excuse to go back to drugs or never get off. 'But...it's a disease, man!'. Addiction is not a disease. It's addiction. There are no excuses to not quit whatever other than not having the strength to do so. 'Aw, he did some drugs. It's a disease, I hope he gets better'. Bull****.

I prefer Steve Caballero's skating compared to Rodney Mullen.

I appreciate that Mullen innovated the tricks such as the Kickflip and almost all of its' variations. But for some reason his awkward, arm windmilling, "freestyle" virtuoso, skating never really did it for me. Though his impact on skating is quite clear.

Steve Caballero adapted form Bowl/Ramp skating to become a full fledged street skater at the age of 30 (huge handrails and all). Including a legendary street skating part. That was more impressive than Rodney Mullen having the same style throughout his all career, but that's just my opinion.

Good for his knees, bowl skating is cool again and here's a recent clip of him and probably more of your favorite skaters killing it. I think you'll appreciate this (filmed on Tony Hawk's birthday this year).

Met him back in the early/mid 80s. He was a total cheesedick/fashionboy. As far as I can remember, he never even invented a trick. He certainly created variations of tricks to add "style" and some of his flamboyant personality, but nothing truly original. Rocket Air? Please. He went high. Very high. That was his game. Skateboarding began to progress into more and more technical tricks. He couldn't catch up. Street skating didn't shove him into the abyss. Tricks did. Oh...and drugs. He was actually the first person I ever remember seeing do blow. He and _________ [name withheld] were doing lines under the ramp before Shut Up and Skate 84 or 85 at the SPoH. I was blown (!) away.

The truth of the matter is...he couldn't hold Jeff Phillips' jock.
