If you want bad service locally, go try Stadia......been three times and horrible service each time. Saturday night we had two hours to kill to eat and still were almost late to where we needed to be because it was so slow....sad.

Anything that's remotely considered fast food or if I'm picking it up does not get a tip. All that person did was hand me the food.

I'd prefer the restaurants continue their ways. I want the ability to reward or not reward service.

It's an annoyingly stupid model that serves to shaft the waitstaff for the benefit of the restaurant. I would rather pay a bit more upfront and just raise the wages for the waiters a la Europe.

That being said, it is what it is and I tip, albeit less than most.

I worked for a restaurant in college and started out as a togo person. We got minimum wage to start and worked for tips. We did a lot though. The order wasn't put together and given to us. We even made the salads. That was more than the servers had to do for thier tables. Also, servers help eachother out. If we got behind then we were just out of luck. I didnt expect much, maybe a dollar here and there though. I waited tables for years after that and it was the most miserable but well paying job ive had. It really made me hate people. For me it seemed the tables that I really busted my butt for were the ones who never tipped. I did get offered quite a few jobs actually though. I never took any of them because I was finishing school though. Anyway....I respect the togo people if I see them working like I had to.

Tips used to be 10-15% now it is expected to be 15-20% are we going to need to tip 20-25% or even 25-30% a few years down the line? Who came up with these rules?

Gas prices went up....also it takes some common sense when tipping in some cases. If you go somewhere for lunch and everything is priced down for lunch specials.....leave towards the higher.....restaurants do make a killing with everyone paying eachother though.....

And they don't even have to tip for that? Why can't we have that?

It's all a ploy so restaurant owners don't have a massive payroll tax bill so all workers make $2.15 not $10 which would quintuple te payroll tax commitment, payroll tax is a pain the ass. I agree a $400 dinner for 6 people at a nice restaurant is not worth $70/hr of work for the waiter

Gas prices went up? That's your argument. That doesn't even make sense. Food prices go up too. Which means the 15% I tip equals more money already. Why does the percentage of tipping have to go up in addition to the price of the goods?

Didnt read thread, but tipping is a way for waiters/waitresses to get paid extra by not declaring it fully to the taxman.

    Rule #508:

Eat like a local, tip like an American.

yEa europe is so much better, this is basically the owners job to pay their employee and they use this bs loophole to put on a customer. in europe i only pay tip if they really go above and beyond, and that is the wayit should be. its just an annoyance

Do Europeans that visit the states know that they have to tip when visiting a restaurant? I can't imagine their wtf-ness when they realize this for the first time.
