Still hitting way too many pop flies. DeShields has some power, but I don't think that's his game. I really like the discipline that he's shown this season, though. Usually, 3 years at the same level doesn't exactly bode well for one's prospect status, regardless of his age.
he's getting on base at a .360 clip, right? if you're getting on base that frequently AND you're fast, then you're a dangerous weapon.
For some reason I think he'd do well at Lancaster. Even though his average's don't necessarily warrant a promotion, I think playing in a hitter's park could help his confidence as a guy that hasn't taken the position change very smoothly. I'm curious if Luhnow would move him back to his "natural" position in the OF similar to moving Paredes to 2nd. However, the OF corps are crowded as is so I guess that'd be counterproductive.
He clearly has the quickness and speed so could he potentially move to SS? I'm guessing he lacks the hands and instincts to ever make that switch but I wish he could because while JioMier is improving, SS is still a weak area of depth.
I think DeShields would have been moved already if Luhnow didn't see his most value at second. He may get moved back at some point, but I think they still think DeShields will become a passable if not good defender at second.
It's hard to believe how much better Deshields is this year over last year. Two walks tonight, SB and a run scored. His OBP is up over .360 now. He has 30 steals on the year to go along with 30 walks. On pace for over 100 of each.
You really think SS is a weak area? I feel it's probably the strongest area on the team. Lowrie has earned his spot on the major league club and I feel like in 2-3 years Villar and Mier could be very productive players on a number of ML teams.
It isn't necessarily a strength, but not weak either. We also have Marwin Gonzalez. We lack the potential star (other than Lowrie), but we don't need a star SS if we have stars elsewhere.
I thought Mier was about to inch his way back into our top 10, and most likely into the top 10 of all minor league shortstops. He was having a sensational season. If he can come back and do anything close to that for the rest of the season, I feel he will be back on our top 10 organizational lists.
Mier was starting to turn it around. I don't see MLB all-star out of him. He may develop into MLB SS still though.
2-4 with four more steals today. 36 steals on the year, which is already more than he had all of last year. OBP up to .365 now. If he can get his .avg, which is now at .256, up to .270 by the end of the year, I think there is no doubt he will be one of the Top 100 prospects in baseball. He is already far out-performing what Billy Hamilton did last year to get himself into the Top 50.
268/372/374 now with 42 steals Can we possibly hope for 280/380/380? If he does that and ends up with 80 steals, I think he has a great chance to be in the top 50 prospects overall.
Glad to see he's putting it together. Hopefully he'll at least get a shot at Lancaster this season. I just wonder where he fits with the depth now at 2B and in the OF should he be moved back there. How has his defense been?
Let's not put too much emphasis on lists. I don't think he'll jump to a Top 50 prospect, but he may get on Top 100 list.
I wouldn't quite say far outperforming. Hamilton had 100 steals...100 steals! Along with hitting .278 and playing a more premium defensive position.
Yeah but no one expects Hamilton to stay at short, so I don't really think that plays into their scouting report. Deshields is on pace for about 85 steals himself, so that's a marginal difference. The biggest thing is that Deshields is one full year younger this year, at the same exact level, than Hamilton was last year. Deshields has a higher slugging pct. than Hamilton did last year and is a full 30 points up in the on base department. This is all assuming Deshields keeps up this pace.
Projected out to a 162 game schedule 117 Runs, 109 Steals Over his last 29 games .314 Avg .396 OBP .441 SLG .837 OPS Nothing left to prove here, offensively he's doing it all. Ultimately I think he's destined to move back to center with second hopefully occupied for the foreseeable future in Houston, but a move back to center can wait We'll see if this maintains, but he certainly needs to be in Lancaster now.
Would like to see him cut down on his strikeouts still. Striking out once every four at bats, which is right around the cutoff point for being an acceptable amount for me. For a leadoff guy, I'd like to see him make more contact. I'd also like to see him drive the ball more. Granted, he can turn a single into a double easily by stealing bases, but he's got some pop in him, I'd like to see him utilize his power. Baby steps guys. It's going to be a process for him to put his entire game together. Glad to see he's actually getting hits now, but I'd like to see him drive the ball into the gaps more and cut down on his Ks before pushing him up to Lancaster.
In a 600 at bat season, that would be around 150 times. With his speed that should not be right around a cutoff point to anyone.
