With the year almost over, it is time to look back at what you think were the best albums in music that came out this year. I bought so many new albums this year, but my top 5 would have to be: 1) "A Rush of Blood to the Head" - Coldplay 2) "Sea Change" - Beck 3) "Up" - Peter Gabriel 4) "18" - Moby 5) "I Get Wet" - Andrew W.K. Honorable mentions: "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" - Wilco "Songs for the Deaf" - Queens of the Stone Age "Audioslave" - Audioslave "White Blood Cells" - White Stripes "Veni Vidi Vicious" - The Hives "Highly Evolved" - The Vines "Private Press" - DJ Shadow "Geogaddi" - Boards of Canada "Come With Us" - Chemical Brothers "Conjure One" - Conjure One "Drukqs" - Aphex Twin "A Hundred Days Off" - Underworld As a matter of fact, the only album that I bought that was new to 2002 that I was disappointed in was "The Isness" by Future Sound of London.
...Trail of Dead - Source tags and codes. The best indie (for lack of a better term) rock album i've heard in years. Its one of those albums you know you'll listen to in 20 years.
Well, I didn't actually buy many CD's actually released this year, but here are a few I love: Bruce Springsteen- The Rising Dave Matthews Band-Busted Stuff, Concert at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado Santana-Shaman John Mayer-Room for Squares CD's from this year that I haven't got around to buying yet: Jack Johnson-Whatever his CD is called(I haven't heard all of the CD, but I liked Flake a lot) U2-Best of 1990-2000 Paul McCartney-Back in the U.S.(Not so sure if I really want this one...Just don't really like the idea of Paul doing Beatles songs)
Was System of a Down's Toxicity in 2002? If so, I choose that album. If not, then I have to go with either Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, or Spock's Beard's Snow.
Santana - Shaman Bruce Springsteen - The Rising Foo Fighters - One by One As personal fave's, I'd add John Mayer's Room for Squares, Duncan Sheik's Daylight, Peter Gabriel's Up and Audioslave's self-titled debut.
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Beck - Sea Change Elvis Costello - When I Was Cruel
Ya know, I was gonna post a thread on this -- seems you beat me to it 1. DMB - Busted Stuff -- Arguably the best CD of DMB's career. I liked the "Lillywhite Sessions" better, but not much. In the end, this CD is a stellar performance from the best band in music today (IMO of course . . . ). 2. Phil Lesh and Friends - There and Back Again -- I bought this CD because I've heard a few Phil Lesh and Friends concerts and they were okay so I figured it'd be worth taking a chance on the studio CD. Now, the concerts for PL+F are long, drawn-out jam-fests. This CD is like night and day compared to the concerts. The songs are perfect in length, with the longest at 6:47. Listen to it once or twice and you'll be hooked. Flat out great Rock music. 3. Patrice Pike and the Blackbox Rebellion - Fencing Under Fire -- I first heard this band do an interview and live performance on 90.1 about six months ago. I liked what I heard and wrote down the band's name on a slip of paper. For the past six months, that piece of paper has been sitting on my desk, reminding me that I needed to get this album to see if it was that good. Well, I was at Wherehouse Music about a week ago and I just happened to notice this CD sitting there. After having listened to it exclusively for the past week, I am really surprised by how good it is. The song-writing is really solid, and the music is pretty unique. I noticed this CD at a different Wherehouse music the other day, and I think they are carrying one copy of it in every store. If you're ever there, just go look it up. The CD starts out with the FABULOUS song "Dominique" which really gets you into the CD. It grabs and holds your attention for the entire album and you are left wanting more. 4. David Gray - A New Day at Midnight -- I hated this CD the first time I heard it. I finally pushed myself to listen to it a few more times and I have fallen in love with it. It's not as easy to love as White Ladder, but it's a BETTER CD. The Songs aren't as catchy, and there really aren't any potential hits IMO, but it's got a great heartfelt quality that just blows you away. Great Work by David Gray, and a fabulous way to follow the excellent White Ladder album. 5. The Blind Boys of Alabama - Higher Ground -- This album features Robert Randolph and the Family Band as well as Ben Harper on a few tracks. For this fifth choice, I had such a difficult time picking one CD that stood out, but in the end, I think this CD has had more of an impression on me personally than just about any other this year. And having Robert Randolph's Band and Ben Harper on this album just seals the deal. Honorable Mentions: Norah Jones - Come Away With Me Jurassic 5 - Power in Numbers Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales Tim Reynolds - Petroglyph Gov't Mule - The Deep End Vol. 2 Other great albums of this year that are non-studio or compilations: DMB - Live at Folsom Field -- It's live DMB -- you can't go wrong there!! This was not the concert I'd have picked from that year (I'd have gone with 7/15/01 or 7/25/01) but it's a good show nonetheless. Live at Bonnaroo -- This is a compilation CD of various songs from this year's Bonnaroo music festival. Another 2-CD set that doesn't really belong on this list as an album of this year, but it's so fabulous I can't pass up mentioning it. The key with this 2-CD set is that it provides a neat introduction to a lot of artists you have likely never heard. Guys like the John Butler Trio, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Jurassic 5 and moe. make this compilation a must-have for any music fan. It didn't capture Bonnaroo in the sense that there are only a few songs that demonstrate the jam-band quality that most of the bands there are known for, but the CD makes the bands so accessible. I've already bought a half-dozen CDs because I'd heard the artist on this set. It's got a great mix of various types of music and is just a flat-out GREAT compilation. Bela Fleck and The Flecktones - Live at the Quick -- another GREAT live band with some excellent guests. Jimi Hendrix - Live at the Isle of Wight (aka Wild Blue Angel) -- One of the last performances by one of the greatest ever. Nirvana - Nirvana -- it's almost entirely recycled material, but it's good recycled material . . . and the "new" song is very good.
"More Than You Think You Are" by matchbox twenty. Another great release from my favorite band of all time. With this CD, they take a somewhat less commercial sound and pull of an album full of great songs. Rob Thomas has expanded his vocal range a lot and shows why he is one of the hottest songwriters in the industry right now.
1. cold play - a rush of blood to the head (imo alot better than their debut and easily my pick for album of the year) the rest that i actually bought: oasis- heathen chemistry matchbox 20 - more than you think you are santana - shaman 2pac - better dayz
Damn. You guys are keeping the music industry alive. For every song downloaded off Kazaa, y'all buy like eight CDs. Only 2002 release I bought: "Bounce"- Bon Jovi Not their best, IMHO, but the title track f'n' rocks. "...count me out count me in I'll be bouncing back again..."
Vengeance, You might want to look at getting "Up" by Peter Gabriel. It is nothing like "So"; it is more like his 3rd self-titled album - very dark. But I don't tell you to get it for this, but because the Blind Boys of Alabama are on 2 tracks including one of the best songs I have ever heard in "Sky Blue".
I heard Blind Boys of Alabama live on Austin City Limits and was in awe! They played with Robert Randolph on the steel guitar and had the crowd rockin'. I'll definitely try to hear some more from them in the near future. Morgan Heritage- More Teachings was my favorite new album. Now it may be Blind Boys of Alabama. I don't know any of their albums, though. Only what I heard on ACL.
My favorites from this year Nas - The Lost Tapes Roots - Phrenology Vivian Green- Love Story D-Styles- Phantazmagorea DJ Shadow - Private Press Slum Village - Trinity Slum Village - Dirty District J5- Power In Numbers Common- Electric Circus

I didn't buy a single CD in 2002. So why am I posting here? Just to break up the party... I'm in a dumb mood, if you can't tell. I'm still suffering from the aftereffects of a 25 degree temperature drop and 50mph wind shift before going to the Rockets game last night and after exiting the HP Center (or Compaq, whatever).
DMB - Live @ Folsom is good, but Red Rocks is a lot better. While i havent heard all of BS, the songs i do have i like a lot, although i'm not quite as enamored w/ "bartender" as as many people seem to be. the video for "grey st." is awesome (all concert footage from Gorge). Jack Johnson - been listeneing to what few tracks of his a could find for nearly 2 years before Brushfire Fairytales came out. gotta say i love this album. i'm also a big fan of J5 and the Roots, but have only heard a few songs from each of their new albums, but you probably couldnt go wrong w/ either one.
