Let me mention, the director's cut DVD will probably restore a lot of backstory. There were even pictures and storyline and character lines in a recent book of the movie that didn't make this cut. The horse that saved Aragorn was named Brego. Aragorn set him free from the Edoras stables because the horse seemed untamable and freaked out after too much time in battle. There will also be a scene of Treebeard reciting a long poem, perhaps a story of the Ents in the world...? I learned after "Jurassic Park" not to get too worked up about a novel-becoming-a-movie. The director/screenwriter will always change the story to fit his or her needs or to make the tale more "cinematic." And the CGI was not fake! Who wrote that? Ah, I'm not gonna go look. If anything looked "fake" it's because we wouldn't see Treebeard walking down the street. What's a walking, talking tree supposed to look like, anyway? They did Treebeard justice but really outdid themselves with Gollum. Good Lord. Gollum for best actor in a supporting role.
Saw the movie last night, and it was VERY good, the battle scenes really did it for me. Made up for some of the lesser parts. There were a lot of cheesy parts that were blech. The whole monlogue by Sam, the part just before the Urukai break through the inner keep, where the King and Aragon are talking. The fire part someone mentioned earlier. I also thought the scenes the Ents could have been a little shorter. Who thought at the end Frodo and Sam were gonna get it on?!? I was thinking Frodo would lean forward and lay it on Sam any second. But they redeemed that part with Sam being happy and murmuring 'Sam the Brave' to himself. Gollum was incredibly done. I agree for the Oscar nod there Frodo and Sam's acting was very good. The Kings advisor was great. I love the look on his face when Saruman walks him out to show the army. Basically, the acting was great through and through. And to close, Liv Tyler is HOT!!!
haha yeah. that part was freaking hilarious. they showed the scene of the water flowing first and then the ent with fire on top of his head running entering into the left side of the scene faster than everyone (tree?) else and dousing his head in first. brilliant tree. i for one loved the funny bits and lines (the ents deciding the hobbits weren't orcs, gimli). too bad you guys had to be so serious all the time. i love the two towers. the split allowed different stories running. merry and peppin, frodo sam and gollum, etc etc. and the battle at helm's deep, when gandalf came? damn i had goose pimples. and i never appreciate battle scenes much. the fellowship bored me because everyone was still together and nothing pretty much happened outside them 9. nomar, you didn't like lotr 1? weren't you the guy who told me to push a puny arrow through my brains when i mentioned i didn't like the fellowship? (sorry if it was drewdog instead. i get mixed up between the 2 of you. but you're the guy who hated spiderman right?)
You said that an arrow would snap if somebody tried shoving it into somebody's eye, like Legolas did in Fellowship. I thought that that sounded a little dumb, so I told you to try it out yourself. I hated Spiderman, I thought it was drivel. I thought Fellowship was dissapointing, but at least better than Two Towers. I just thought that the movies should have been better. Oh well. BTW - It's not supposed to be funny.
A few things: Helm's deep could have been better. The only reason they won the battle in the book was because of the trees. No trees in the movie. I also didnt like how they just charged out of the fortress while riding the horses. It looked like the thousands of orcs were diving out of the way, off the bridge, rather than trying to stop them. I was also shocked when the elves showed up out of nowhere at Helms Deep. The dwarf tossing scene just went too far. I mean come on, dwarf tossing? downright offensive. I read the book a few months back but cant remember if Aragorn fell off a cliff in the books. Did a battle even take place in the books at that point in the story? I know there werent giant dog-like creatures. I was disappointed with Faramir. In the book, didnt Faramir refuse the ring or something like that? i know he didnt drag frodo to gondor. I dont remember the Theoden's daughter in the 2nd book. correct me if i'm wrong, but it seemed like they just inserted a love interest for aragorn randomly. I really liked Gollum, by far my favorite part of this movie. Feel free to correct any of my thoughts, my memory of the book isnt what it used to be.
nomar oh god it cant be funny. jeez you uh "purists''. its a movie. i dont think there's any movie out there now that doesn't have at least one scene where they try to be humorous. i think i said that legolas would use an arrow (minus the bow, as in the arrow itself as a sword) and stab the uruk hais in close combat. i thought THAT was pretty hard to take since it must be already tough fighting them with swords and this elf sneaks up on them and stabs them in the neck. i thought you told me to stab myself cos i didn't like lotr 1 and you did. so quite surprised to see you suddeny calling it dissapointing. either way, it must be my mistake cos in 2 towers it was pretty obvious he has a sword. i'm planning on getting the fellowship extended dvd but i still think i'd prefer 2 towers. at least we both hate spiderman.
Uh, he didn't sneak up on them. If you remember correctly, the scene you are referring to took place after a battle with Aragorn and the Uruk-Hai had already begun. Legolas was charged by an orc and he was too close to shoot him so he stabbed him with the arrow. What's so hard to understand about that?
A reinforcement of 200 took down the remaining 5,000 or so orcs that remained. Gandalf the White must've kicked so much ass. Too bad we didn't see him in action on camera...
(dont know why i bother but) not about a matter of understanding, but wether its possible to kill an orc charging at you with just an arrow (aren't archers supposed to be crap at close combats?). i guess orcs aren't very smart. actually, if he did sneak up on one of the orcs and stab them with his arrow, that would've been more doable. i dont know, just that when i saw it happen in the movie, i kind of sat up and had to and then
1. I dont remember trees at Helms Deep. Gandalf sent the Ents to isrengard to defeat sarumon. 2. Peter Jackson put in the dog scene and Aragorn falling off the cliff for cinematic purposes. I think he said his disappearance was a rebirth of the King, and setting up the last movie for his return. 3. Faramir's character from the movie and book is probably the most maligned character out of all the books. 4. Eowyn was definetly in TTT book. She had a thing for Aragorn, so that wasnt random. But I dont recall him showing any return affection like it preluded to in the movie.
Nutcracker, The Horns...a moving forest showed up BEHIND the orcs at Helms Deep, Gandalf scared them into the forest and in the morning, the forest was gone, and the plains was littered with Orc bodies. The Horns killed the army. DaDakota
I do seem to remember the book mentioning that after most of the Orcs had been killed and just a few thousand or so were left that they all looked around and noticed that during the battle, they had been completely surrounded by trees on all sides. I don't remember it saying anywhere that the trees killed any of the Orcs or did anything actively, I think it was just another veiled threat that was used to demoralize the Orcs. But then, I could be wrong.
Totally agree! The first movie was not bad, somewhat slow. This movie is bada$$! Gollum was hillarious and the battle scenes at Helm's Deep and when the trees attacked Saruman were fantastic. I have to say that the previews before this movie were the best ever. XMEN 2, Terminator 3, Dumb and Dumberer and Bruce Almighty. I want to see all of these. I WILL be at the very first show of T3 - July 2nd, 2003. 2003 will be the best year of movies in a LONG time.
shorter??? i thougt it was to short, i loved the Ents. i finally saw the movie. I read al the books, so i had some expectations for the movie. But i wanted to look at the movie appart from the book. ! thing i did compair to the book was Faramir. i heard he was alot different from the books in the movie. But i liked how he was in the movie, just as i thought he was in the book. i really loved the movie. Both returns of the white rider where great. Aragorn was great. Gimli, was just as the books. He was clumpsie on a horse. i saw somebody here saying they didn't like him because he was to clumpsy. But he was just as i thought a dwarf would be. the only thing i didn't like as much as in the books was the first meeting betwee the white rider and theoden. but overal i loved the movie, Gollem was good. Faramir was great and Eomer was also great just as i imagend them. great movie.
Man, I finally got to see it - and I loved it!!! For perspective, I'm one of the big book fans - I've read them at least a dozen times. However, the difference between me and Nomar is that I tried not to get my expectations too high for this movie and tried to avoid all trailers as well. I thought that the dialogue was great in this movie. I had read Nomar's sig and was prepared for Star Wars style crap, but I thought there was very little poor dialogue like the "Let's hunt some orc!" from the first movie. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Helm's deep was awesome. The dwarf toss was nicely set up by the first movie and was really nice comic relief. In retrospect however, the complete lack of anti-siegecraft by the defenders sucked. Plus, the end of the siege with horses running down a 40 degree slope onto a bunch of pikes was ridiculous. They needed to insert Gandalf kicking some ass there, and then the riders chasing the routed forces into the welcoming boughs of the wood. Still, mostly minor quibbles I guess. Gollum/Smeagol was awesome. I don't think that they could have done it any better. Alas, poor Faramir! Bad casting. The changes did not work for me either, although I understand that Peter used it for character development of Sam, Frodo, Gollum and the power of the ring over Frodo. I guess I may see the error of my ways when I can watch the whole trilogy. I felt short-changed on the Ents. Having Merry/Pippin need to trick them to see Isengard and get pissed was a little weak. I really would have liked to have seen the real Ent-moot, with more ents in the meeting and then them gradually building up steam. Hroom hroom hroom, we march on Isengard! I also missed a memorable quote from Gandalf: "A thing is about to happen which has not happened since the Elder Days: the Ents are going to wake up and find that they are strong." Maybe in the extended version? Anyway, it kicked much ass. Nomar, it's nice that you are a fan of the books and all, but if you think Spielberg or anyone else could have done a better job, you are nuts. PJ did an amazing job of bringing out the spirit of the movie while making it worth watching for fans of the book and normal people.
i kinda likes Faramir. I read the books several times. He did take them psisoner and the scene with gollum happened in the books. I'm not verry pleased that he takes them to Gondor. and the reason that he lets them go. But i think you can see in him that he is asmart person, who has doubts about what he should do from the beginning. i also didn't really liked this part. i thought there was too little Ents in the movie, they where my favorite species in the books. And i would like too see the march too isengard. the other thing i didn't really like was the healing of Theoden. i thought it would be better if it was more like the books. i think it is difficult for Jackson to make a movie that is like every expectation of every person. We al had an idea how everybody looked and what happened. i really liked the movie, i liked the fact how Arwen was made more importend in the movei, than she was in the books. i think it is a beautifull and sad love story. overall i really loved the movie. the battle of the ents and helmsdeep where great. The persuit of the orcs was also great. I liked how Eomer was in the movie. A verry proud and strong men. Gollum was great. And the tension between sam and frodo were great.
This is the only part of the movies I didn't like. It seems like they just wanted to get more screentime for little miss Aerosmith. Enough so that they completely eliminated the character of Glorfindel. Overall, this was onew of my favorite movies, all time.
