I agree with CBFC on this one - if you're going to talk about that stuff do it someplace else - people come here to talk basketball, not read about that. But Mutumbo doesn't suck - his pathetic offence is irrelevant considering he shoots well over 50% - which kind of means that he musn't take that many shots to get his 10-15ppg. The guy rebounds well and blocks well and wags his finger (ok that's not so good!) - if he was 5-10 years younger I'd be the first one to stand up and say what a great fit he'd be!! Of course he's not young and so I don't want him - but if we could get a young Mutumbo style player.... oh wait - if Cato could rebound then maybe he could be a Mutumbo style player... interesting. ------------------

heypartner -- I believe we did catch a few teams off-guard last year. But, it seems like the next time we played a lot of them, they adjusted, and we had no counter for it. The Lakers game on NBC (the 2nd one, the one they cut away from at halftime because it was so bad) is a good example. Also, it seems Riley had a tough time guarding Bullard on pick-n-rolls when we played them. I think the following statistic is why Mutombo will make as much as he does next year: In 2 games, 33 minutes, Shaq averaged a mere 16 points & 12 rebounds against Atlanta, and Mutombo averaged (against LAL) 11.5 points & 13.5 rebounds.....and I'll tell u one thing, Lorezen Wright wasn't the one defending Shaquille.......Shaq's averages last season is 29.7 ppg, and 13.6 rebounds per game.... Now if I wanted a ring, I'd have to go through Shaq....Mourning is all wrapped up.....Mutombo sounds nice..... But one thing u said was right, Rockets shouldn't pick him up....someone in need of the final piece (Phoenix, if tsakilidis can't play this year)...... ------------------

Dikembe whines CONSTANTLY. He is SLOW. He does only the tangibles and none of the intangibles. As in Otis thorpe threw a good elbow, set a perfect pick, threw a good (sometimes too industrious) outlet pass...etc. Mutombo...Rebounds, blocks, and a few easy layups. Nothing else. If Cato steps up his game (read defensive intensity) this will all be a moot point. Sane's numbers indicate how Mutombo neutralizes Shaq. Anything remotely approaching that (by Cato) and we got a tremendous bargain. We can take the difference in Cato $ vs Mutombo $ and spend it somewhere else (CWebb/Shandon/Mo....?). Let's let Cato settle it on the court this year and worry about Mutombo next summer if it's necessary. I really doubt we will have this conversation at that time. ------------------ GATER
I agree with the other posters that Cato put up Dike numbers when/if he decides to put some effort in his game. Now that we have our low post presence in Mo, he should concentrate on cleaning the o/d glass and playing strong interior d. P.S. Why are Rocket's fans so enamored of Mutombo? Are we not trying to build a team structured around Steve Francis? I say that Mutombo is exactly the wrong person for this team. He is incredibly, incredibly slow, and he's a stiff. He aspires to be as athletic as Matt Bullard. He is a very good rebounder, and he does block shots frequently, but nothing comes of it. I have never seen Mutombo yank down a rebounder and fire off an outlet pass that started a fast break. Thats gonna be important to a team that features young, athletic guards as their primary offensive weapons. Maybe he's good for some teams, but not for this one.
