When Yao's shoot time less than 1/3 of Francis and Mobley I am almost sure rockets will lost their game. Pls look my former statistics.
I saw your stats and found them to be interesting, but not necessarily indicative. Yao is starting to get double-teamed down low and is receiving the ball further out, away from the low block. When that happens, it's his job to judge whether he can shoot his turnaround, do his baseline spin move, or pass out. The result of this new-found attention on Yao is that Francis, Mobley, and Rice are not getting double-teamed so of course they're going to get to shoot the ball more. And like I said in another thread, I don't look at stats before the Spurs game (December 3). That's when Yao became one with the offense. If Yao passes out of the paint or out of a double-team, it is Mobley's, Francis', and Rice's job to hit that jumper because Yao has done his - he's attracted the defense away from them. Unfortunately our guys on the perimeter have done an inconsistent job doing so. Want an example of what happens when Yao passes out and our perimeter guys are hitting? That turnaround during the Hawks game is an example of our offense doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Or if you want to go back a few years, look at the highlights of Hakeem and 4 dwarves during the 93-94 and 94-95 seasons.
LOL @ another "evil guards" conspiracy post... I suppose that Yao's lower FT%, rebs, blocks, and increased TOs on the road are also attributed to the evil mind powers of Francis and Mobley?
When Yao has a sub-standard game, it's because he's "tired". When every other player has a sub-standard game, it's because they have low bball IQ, they're selfish, they suck, and the result is that they have to be traded. Funny how that works out, eh?
Yao still gives up a lot of turnovers when he has the ball, especially on post up moves where his back is facing away from the goal. Defenders often like to go around him from the back and snatch the ball while his head is turned. While I think Yao should get more shots, I also think they're handling him well. When he adjusts to the NBA more, and has better court awareness of where all the defenders are, then that's when the Rockets will have their offense run through him, and should be getting anywhere from 20-25 shots a game, which is about the average that Shaq and Kobe get on a nightly basis. Although I'd be perfectly happy with 15-18 shots since we have much better talent then the Lakers do, with a more athletic lineup to boot.
The guards need to warn Yao if their is a sneaky guard coming around behind him. They need to communicate. Also, the guard that passes the ball to Yao needs to place the ball in the post at the right time. Not when there is a guard "hiding in the weeds."
How is that incorrect? You attempt to make a sarcastic comment when nothing is further from the truth. Cat throwing up 6 bricks from 3 point range is smart basketball? How about 2 for 19 as a team from 3 point range? There is no reason Yao should have less than 15 shots per game. There were plenty of oppurtunities for them to establish the low post early before double teams arrive. Instead, they just stand around and waste about 10 seconds before the defense totally collapses on him with almost no time remaining on the shot clock. Have you ever seen them pass to Yao when he sets the screen at the top of the key and rolls to the basket? if he's within 5 feet, 60% of the time, it's money. The only shots Yao has real problems are the ones when he ducks under the defender and tries to bank it in or when he shoots the turnaround jumper too far away. If you think the classifying the Rockets guard play as anything other than selfish, you should consider paying attention the next time you watch the game.
My point is, that after Yao misses his first few shots, people in the chat straight away come out with "he looks tired" "he needs his mom with him on road trips". BS like that. Anyone else makes mistakes and it's the end of the world. I'm just looking for consistency. Trash one, trash all. Can you do that for me? Personally I don't see the need to trash any of our players. This is the team I support. Get it? SUPPORT.
If you support the team, you should also be able to recognize its weaknessess rather than deny they exist or accept them as if by doing so - youre not a true fan or youre disloyal. There's a reason people rag on Cat and Stevie. Remember the time there was a 1 on 4 fast break and instead of pulling up, Steve drives to the hole and forces up a bad shot. Or when Cat is on the break and shoots a brick from 3 point land (as a general rule you only do this on 2 occasssions - at the very end of a game or when you have 2 teammates waiting to rebound underneath). I understand what youre trying to say but the reason there's so much clamor and disgust is because it's at the root of our inconsistency. People dont rag on Yao because he's always willing to pass and he's the freaking center. The guards who get paid to distribute the ball take wild shots. It's like a evil alternate universe where everything is screwed up. If youre a fan of the Rockets, not just Yao or Steve or Cat, you should recognize the weaknesses and hope they solve them at some point.
Great. My loyalty is being questioned by this jonny-come-lately. I have no problem with criticism as long as it's justified and everyone gets it when they deserve it. I don't see that here sometimes. Also praise should be given when it is deserved, and that also is a little slow in coming where certain players are concerned. Of course I know this team is not perfect, but I also realise it takes more than 3 months of the season for this team of young players to consistently play how we would all like them to.
jonny come lately eh? I was a fan since the 70's. The fact I just registered on this board a year later than doesn't make me any less of a fan. I suggest you go through my posts - the majority of which deal with actual game play, strategies, etc. Instead of contributing generalities, why don't you pay attention and give specifics. Why do some players get the benefit of the doubt more than others? Because they deserve it. Question: Have you ever seen Yao take a shot while he's double teamed? have you ever seen him not at least make an attempt to pass? Have you ever considered the possibility that if you throw up a wild shot and it goes in, maybe you deserve to receive less praise than the guy who makes a basket off a rebound? The most ironic part of your post is your mantra that basketball is a team sport while trying to deflect blame away from the 2 players who least adhere to team play.
Thank you for saying that David. Ive noticed that happening too. His teamated need to give him a heads up when their man has left them to go after Yao on the blindside. It seems to be that whoever's man has left to do that to Yao is concentrating more on getting the pass from Yao rather than communicating to him that hes about to have the ball stolen.
Not sure what you're getting at, but this is the first thread I've started in years in this forum. You're just being an old member-hata.
Why can't you attribute Cat's 5 'bricks' to fatigue? Surely you're not going to suggest that in any way Cuttino is a bad 3-point shooter - in fact he's a very good shooter. Good basketball IQ suggests that you shoot the 3-ball when it's available (if you're a good shooter). Why not judge the players with the same measure? If Steve had 6 turnovers someone would probably compose a song about how loose he is with the ball.
Basketball IQ suggests if youre 82nd in the league in 3 point FG% shooting - 30%, maybe you shouldnt be shooting 6 of them. Basketball IQ Suggests you should not throw up a 3 pointer with a hand in your face when you have 20 seconds on the shot clock with no ball movement. Basketball IQ Suggests the person who leads the league in FG% should take more shots than the guy shooting 41%. What's your Basketball IQ?
I'll agree with you there on ONE point. I've always believed that a shooter (or any player for that matter) should shoot the ball if open. But, it's the team's system that should give you that "open" shot in the first place. Not one-on-one. Or worse. Just shooting with a hand in your face. Mobes will take shots when he's not open. Mobes needs to give up the ball more. Who knows, he might just get the ball right back, but in a more open situation. A new aspect of Mobes game is that he's coming off the pick like Reggie Miller does. I love this when the Rockets use Mobley like Miller or Ray Allen.
A major pet peeve of mine is when people try to defend the Rockets' selfish play. ..."No one says anything about so and so when they miss a shot" There's a reason for that - When youre 5 ft away from the basket you're more likely to make it, especially if youre leading the league in FG% . Seriously. If Tony Parker jacks up a 3 and misses vs Tim Duncan missing a 4 ft jumper, who gets more criticism? Why? Nobody comments on Jason Kidd for committing turnovers. Why? Because he's an amazing PG who makes all his teammates better. If you watch the games, many of Francis' and Cat's turnovers occur when driving or dribbling attempting to create their own shot - not setting up a teammate.. This is different than Payton, Kidd, A. Miller, etc who understand their roles and what it takes to get their teammates involved.
