Well, I go to shoot with some guys I know to try to get into shape for our upcoming church league season (the first game starts on the Saturday after New Years). I was playing okay, doing my specialty which is rebounding and missing point blank shots.

After about 5 games, I was still feeling okay and then it happened. I was on defense and the ball was shot and came over to my direction. I aggressively went for it as there was a guy for the other team around. I had the ball in my hands and then I landed. Somehow, with no one around, I didn't land right. I could actually see my left foot violently twist in the opposite direction!

I let out a blood-curdling scream and tears came to my eyes. I felt for sure that I had broken it.:( Of course, everyone came to my aid and one of my friends tightened my left shoe to try to keep it stable (I guess). I was able to walk on it, but there was no way that I could cut on it, let alone run on it. So, my night was done. I later put ice on it and kept it elevated for 45 minutes. I have an Ace bandage and I will wear it periodically when I feel that I need the support.

This is the 5th time that I can think of that I have sprained my ankle and it seems like the majority of the time it has been my left one. The thing looks like an egg now, so I dread what it will look like in the morning.:(

Well, this really sucks and I am very concerned that I will not be able to play by the time the first game starts in January. My biggest fear is that a month or two from now, the thing will just give out since I have sprained it like 3 times in the last 5 years.

Anyway, has anyone else ever experienced pain like this? How long did it take you to recover from a sprain?

I wore a brace for six months and walked with crutches for 6 weeks. Size wise it was bigger than any other ankle I've ever seen. Wear braces when you play any sport, sprained ankles are not worth the pain. I've broken bones that felt more relaxing than a sprain.

I had a similar thing happen to me once. I was just screwing around in the driveway, playing some one on one and I jumped for a rebound, came down on the side of my foot. But it was worse than just that, see, I was on this ledge (where driveway meets the grass there's like a 4 inch drop-off) and the very edge of my foot caught the pavement, but twisted until it completely rolled over and the top of my ankle hit the grass. HURT LIKE HELL!!!

I was certain I'd broken it or done something awful. I went to the doctor the next day, said I had a high-ankle sprain. Got some crutches and used them for 4 days. Then I was able to walk on it okay, but not too well. It was almost six months before I was walking fully normally again. Hurt worse than my broken fingers or any of the other injuries I've had (including getting hit in the face by a fastball).

I've sprained both of my ankles playing basketball and football so much as a kid to the point that a doctor said the next time I sprain either of them severely enough, they'd snap.

The worst sprain I had left me with an ankle the size of a grapefruit and scared the crap out of me. I couldn't walk or put even any slight pressure on it for about a week it hurt so bad.

Just make sure you put something cold on it initially to stop the bleeding... then get a good book and prop it on a heating pad.

    This hurts to even read.

A few years ago, I was playing in a league at The Y. I was chasing a ball down the sidelilne when I hit a puddle of water. My ankle rolled big time, I slid about 8 feet and hit the concrete.

I couldn't return to the basketball court for 10 months. My ankle still snaps, crackles, and pops.

I've heard that sprains are worse than actually breaking something , because most people dont give then time to heal properly.

The most embarrassing sprain I've ever had was my senior year during the first football game of the season. The coaches changed my position from Defensive End to Tight End ( a move I hated). We already had an all-district tight end so my playing time was limited. We were blowing out Stratford 42-7 late in the 4th quarter. I got in at the end of the game. On the second play I blocked the inside linebacker and the defensive end went straight for my ankle which is illegal. I felt it throbbing but I tried to walk it off. The next morning I tried to get out of bed but I couldnt walk at all. I went to the trainer and had it looked at. The coaches saw me and shook their heads at me. It was embarrassing. I got in the last few minutes of the game and got hurt.

One time I was trying to break some kids ankles playing B-ball and ended up doing a crossover where I put all my weight on the side of mu ankle. I hit the ground and was in severe pain, I thought it was broken. I couldn't walk on it for 2 days, turned out to be just a sprain.

    What's that from?

Also, I'm going to ask your some questions and I want to have them answered immediately.

Who is your daddy, and what does he do?

worst one I ever had was my first one. I believe it was a couple of years ago. Jumped up for a rebound, someone collided with me in the air, and I landed with all my weight right on my ankle and twisted it really bad. Since I had never had a lingering injury before, I didn't know how bad it would get. I kept playing through it despite the pain. Big mistake.

Next day my whole foot and ankle were swollen(looked like it wanted to pop) with a nasty dark purple bruise all over. Couldn't fit my foot in my shoe for what? a month or so? so I walked around in sandals(I walk to school), well, actually I limped around. Took about 3 months before I could walk normal w/o pain and about 5 before I could play ball again.

Since then I've slightly sprained my other ankle and reaggravated the serious one a few times. Just tweaked my serious one right before the holidays and I'm not going to do anything to stress it out more over the break. I know how to take care of it now, so it's no big whoop, just takes time.

I think I'll pretty much always have pain from that one first sprain, but oh well. I've known people who have put up with a lot worse than that, so I'm thankful that's all I've got to worry about health-wise.

I don't think I've ever had real bad sprains, but I have had some. My 1st was when I was playing at a local basketball court. I twisted and almost thought I heard a pop, but that may have been my imagination. Still played the rest of the game and forgot the pain, thinking it was nothing. Later, when I got home, I sat down for a while and did some things on the computer. When I went to get up, BANG! Immediate pain in my ankle. Kind of suprised me.

I also got some sprains in basketball practice. Once I jumped straight up and down onto the side of my ankle. I walked that off too. The next day, I limped from class to class and even played in my next basketball game, not mentioning the injury to my coach. (after warming up a little, it wasn't very bad.) After that, I began using ankle braces. I stopped using them now, though. I've been lucky and haven't gotten any this year.

I thought of another one, but this one wasn't about being a bad sprain, but being stupid . . . I used to play racquetball a lot. Well, whenever I'd score a point while running towards the front wall, I'd always keep running then jump off the front wall. Well, one time I was playing a teams game where we scored and I jumped off the front wall, but I landed on the side of my foot when I came down. STUPID!!! What the hell was that for!!?? I had to quit the game and couldn't play for about 2 weeks. Great move . . . REAL smart!!

I had a sprain from playing bb that put me on cruthes for 6 weeks. My job at that time required a fair amount of walking. I got off the crutches a few days too early and misstepped off a curb leading to another 5 weeks on crutches. I still remember practically crying in the gutter out of pure frustration more than the pain. I got very close to losing my job over it.

Ahh the memories, i've sprained my ankles so many times it gives me chills. The one thing that has helped the most to avoid the bad ones is to just remember to get my shoes tied really tight. Even wearing low tops skating it helped more than I ever thought it actually could. One other thing i've noticed is that I have developed a goofy reflex when I roll an ankle. My leg gives way on the side of the twist and I kinda stumble awkwardly. Better than a sprain but the source of strange looks from whoever notices.

I have been extremely lucky. I haven't gotten hurt playing basketball period. Knock on wood. No sprains or anything broken, some painful jammed fingers though.

Pretty recently I felt my ankle roll after coming down with a rebound. I thought for sure that I had done some damage, luckily I got up and it didn't even hurt, thank God! :)

I have seen some pretty bad sprained ankles though.

I always wear high-tops though. I'm only 23, I bet I have plenty of injuries to come.

Ouch. You guys have some scary and familiar stories.

My worst one had to my first. I was a freshman in high school and was playing basketball at a friend's house. I went up for a rebound but came down on somebody's foot, my ankle twisted and I heard a friggin' loud SNAP.

    Then came the screaming.

It was so painful that I was too afraid to even move for like five minutes. This no doubt, contributed to the swelling. By the time I got home, my ankle had the circumference of my calves.

After three days of elevation and laying around on my ass, the swelling had failed to recede so medical attention was sought. I was confined to crutches for two weeks and had to wear a brace for about two months after that (pretty lucky, I guess, after reading don grahamleone's post).

Throughout high school, ankle injuries were a common ailment. But since then, I've lost a lot of weight and haven't had any sprains since 2000 (knock on wood). I still roll them all the time, but they no longer give me anymore trouble.

And now, the image you've all been waiting for:

    Enjoy!

My worst (technically, "worse," since I've only had 2) ankle sprain was fairly typical. Up for a jumper, contact in mid-air, down on the outside of the foot, "crapcrapcrap," high ankle sprain, walking boot + crutches.

My sister had a worse sprain, though. In 8th grade, she wasn't very athletic, but she was tall. (Not sure how tall she was then, but she's 6'0" now.) As a result, the school volleyball coach got her to play for the team. After her first actual kill in a game, she damaged all 3 ligaments on the outside of her left foot. (To add insult to injury, she fell over the midcourt line, forfeiting the point.) That pretty much ender her career. :(

Some of you are really scaring me with having to get these walking boots and crutches and crap.

I'm thinking that if I put ice on it for a while in the next couple of days and keep sleeping with it elevated plus wear an ace bandage on it, that I should be okay.

That is why I don't like going to a doctor about it. It is like they are so quick to give you crutches for it.
