Malone and the Jazz never even made the NBA Finals until Jordan's last two years in the league. Until then, some other team in the Western Conference was always better -- and Jordan didn't play in the Western Conference.

Houston with Hakeem Olajuwon was better. Phoenix with Charles Barkley was better. Portland with Clyde Drexler was better. And, of course, the Lakers with Magic and Kareem were better.

Only when his contemporaries had fallen by the wayside, only when durability had become his generation's most valued trait, only then did Malone rise to the top. Then and only then did the Jazz make the championship series.
