Didn't see anybody posted this. http://www.slamonline.com/online/nb...ctorate-from-barry-university-is-now-dr-shaq/ Now he can be the real Big Aristotle?
When I first read the headline on CNN, I thought it was going to be an honorary doctorate. Very impressed that he took the time to earn this. First Dr. to ever play in the NBA?
That degree sounds absurd. A PhD in HR? And he got it in 4 1/2 years as a part-time student? His dissertation title sounds like an undergrad paper, too. I wonder if they will make it available through UMI/ProQuest? Edit: well, now I see it is an EdD (weak doctorate) but that is still stupid that it is in HR.
obviously his degree isn't what many of us would consider to be an applicable doctorate, but seesh hop off the man's nuts. just because shaq has maintained a rather extroverted disposition relative to his personality (and somewhat his intellectuality), doesn't mean he's a bleeding idiot. he's a joker. he loves get laughs. this is what he does. probably my favorite player other than the dream.
How does the man have a part-time doctorate? A PhD degree is not some part time effort focused on course work. I want to read Shaq's dissertation titled "The Duality of Humor and Aggression in Leadership Styles."
Shaq has ventured deep into things outside of basketball like music and acting and law enforcement. I'm sure he sets some high goals for himself with those He comes off as an oaf. But I know some oafs how are good with focusing on schoolwork somehow. So I wont totally discredit him. Some slow talkers can know things, some articulate types are lazy and dont do anything.
hey, granted its not the most credible university or degree...I give shaq props for placing emphasis and wanting to be in higher education, definitely did one positive example in making that something to reach to even if you have all the money
Barry is a real school. Too bad social sciences are masturbatory in nature and serve no real purpose.
No Barr U is a tough small DII school ....My best friend won their golf team a national chip on HIS putter....I do however think Shaq got around some things on his way to a PhD
I really respect all kinds of education, but I honestly think the EdD is the single horseman of education apocalypse in America. I see these EdD programs exploding, and the only thing the graduates can do is either: (1) work at a university in an admin role, or (2) become an educational consultant. Half the staff at my university are enrolled in the night EdD program, and they just about all have or will have EdD's within a few years. And for what? So they can ask for more salary and change their title to things like "Dean of Undergraduate Alcohol Awareness," or "Vice Assistant to the Provost for Learning Assurance." And to pay all these people, up goes the tuition again.
Yes, and I think that it only adds to the hurtful perception that every single individual is cut out for education and a 9-to-5 desk job. From elemenatry school onward, we're taught that we can achieve anything and in middle school and high school, we're told we should all go to college. Kids pay thousands of dollars and don't graduate or end up graduating and not using their degree for their line of work.
And why is it that people with EdD's or even MEd's always seem to flaunt it more? If they are insecure about it not being a real degree I would think they would not bring it up as much so it seems to be different. My comments have nothing to do with Shaq. Also reminds me of some show I walked in on my wife watching. Some thing about teen pregnancy and one of the mothers of one of the teens had helped her daughter with some school project and the teacher criticized it and the mother literally says, "I am getting an executive MBA which is harder than a regular MBA - because it is EXECUTIVE so I think I would know." So weird.
