With the advent and popularity of cell phones these days, why don't Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony make apps that you can download (for a small fee) that turns your cell phone into its controller. This would be a great way to reduce overhead cost, (I think) expand on controller technology, and keep consumers happy. Practically everyone has a phone nowadays, so why can't you go over to a buddy's house and bring your phone and just start playing, say, Madden with him? Makes sense, doesn't it?

I think it is a great idea, in theory, but I feel that there would be more glitches than a physical controller (joystick would be hard to render, IMO). Also, with some screen sizes, I'm not sure how comfortable it would be. I would pay a few bucks for the app though.

I think they make a lot of money off custom controllers.

Because gamepads are way better to play games with? Who wants to play on a touch screen?

Controls on smart phones (especially with touch screen only) are terrible. That's the biggest reason.

You just don't get the same tactile feedback with a phone that you would get with a controller. Also, how would you simulate analog controls?

Yeah, but aren't there people who game on their smartphones? They manage....

I'm sure this could be addressed.

I'll play games on my phone because that's what's available. If I have a choice between my phone and a PS3 controller with 8 buttons, two analog sticks, and a d-pad I'll take the controller every time. On phones I'm constantly hitting the wrong area, or my finger is sliding off of the button area.

I could see using your phone as an auxiliary display as being more useful (kind of like what the Dreamcast tried to do with their controller), but probably still more trouble that it's worth.

Short of issuing cases that have separate buttons / sticks (which is a possibility), there's also the fact that not everyone uses the same type of smartphone. The closest to something like this I believe will be Sony because of their Playstation phones with Android. I'm not saying it won't happen, but as of right now it wouldnt' be very good.

    What he said.

Seriously? Gaming controllers are 10000000x better than a tocuhscreen phone. I mean, it would come in handy for spare controllers but I wouldnt use it to replace one.

It's going to depend on the game, as there are some games that are still going to be better suited for analog control.

I have played a lot of mobile OS games and I've enjoyed a lot of them, but the control scheme is still not suited for every genre.

In addition, why would Nintendo, MS and Sony put out an app when they can gouge us all for 40-60 bucks for a controller.

Sounds horrible. I would hate gaming with my phone. Also, you wouldn't need an app - Bluetooth.

They don't make money if they use other people's devices.

I would like to be able to just use my phone as a controller for Xbox Music Player / Last.fm.

It would be great to see the playlist on my phone while sitting outside and change songs on the outdoor speakers. I think you can do it with itunes... **** itunes.

That sounds like a terrible idea for the gaming companies themselves.

But a decent money making scheme for some 3rd party.

Not to mention it would be one costly mistake when you inevitably throw it across the room in gaming frustration.
