once his rookie contract expires? 15 - 20 million/year assuming that he becomes the player we expect him to be?

Does anyone think that Yao should earn more than Francis?

That's a touchy issue. I say, since Francis got a 85 million dollar contract
    (7 years, or 6?).

Then, Yao should get a 84 million dollar contract. Just to keep
    Francis happy.

Yao wont care. He's not like that.

Although, maybe his country might care! :D

P.S. Doesn't Juawn Howard have a 112 million dollar contract?

Yipes! Those were the days! NOT!

With the salary cap structure, we can only pay an athlete a certain amount. When Yao is up for anrxtension, I am sure he will get the max amount you can give (and that will depend on the salary cap) for a player with certain # of years in the league.

I just wish he would be able to keep whatever amount for himself, and doesn't have to give a portion to nobody (ShangHai Sharks etc.). That is the compensation for his own hardworking, he deserves every bit of it.

It is too early to talk about something that will happen 4 years later. I don't know Yao, but for me, it will not be good to talk too much about money at the learning stage.

I heard some rumors about Lakers and Mark Cuban would offer more Houston can offer to get Yao if Yao really develops into the unstoppabe force in the league as lots of people expect.

At that stage, Yao will demand more than we can offer even if he does not care that much about the extra cash. Hei, if I am the best, I of course want to get the highest pay.

I don't think that would be too big a deal anyways, (no pun intended) because stevie knows that contracts leapfrog each other all the time.

By the way, it will be pointless to talk about Yao's contract. the Rox will resign Yao no matter how much they have to pay. It is not because of Yao's skill or his BBall IQ. The most important is while Yao having a bright career, his marketing value is BIGGGGGGGGGGG. The market in China is just too huge, and the rox are going to make a lot of money in China. If Yao is doing good jobs and really become a STAR, I won't be surprised even if he get more money than Michael Jordan when resign the contract.

Have to agree with GP here. No matter how much Yao is oftered elsewhere, Rockets will match up. Yao could be THE sportsevent for the next 20 years. He draws much bigger views base than anyone else in the NBA, Jordan included.

I am not an expert on the Collective Bargaining Rules but once Yao becomes a free agent, there is only a certain maximum amount that other teams can offer him. Houston has their "Bird Rights" on Ming which means that they can offer him any amount of money they want regardless of the cap. They might have to pay luxury taxes but the bottom line is that nobody can outbid the Rockets.

What's more likely to happen is that Houston will sign Yao for the maximum allowable before his contract expires so he does not enter free agency.

You all need to go back and read what basketball said about salary caps.

    It is true.

There is a maximum that a player can be paid, and the Rockets will pay that MAX amount.

The Lakers or the Mavs or anyone else will NOT be able to beat what the Rockets will pay him when the time comes.

When Yao comes up for an extension, the Rockets will be able to offer him more money than any other team in the NBA. That is the way the collective bargaining agreement works. The team that has his rights, in this case the Rockets, will be able to offer him the max just as we did with Francis. No other team will be able to offer him more money.

Besides, I echo what others have said. We should worry about that bridge when we come to it. That's four years away. Let's enjoy what we have NOW instead of worrying about what may or may not happen.

i don't think the max is even needed to resign yao. he's pretty loyal, even some huge offer elsewhere won't tempt him away. :D

that's what i heard/my understanding of him too.

he comes from a completely different world to the "me first" nba player. the good of the team is more important than the "good" (sorry about the bad grammar) of the individual. plus there is also the fact that he wanted to be a rocket before we won his rights (btw that was a very happy day:))

that isn't even taking into account we can pay him more than any other team. we can offer him 1 year longer on his contract, and raises of 12.5% per season, compare to 10% on the other teams.

this is also a moot point as there will be a new CBA when the time comes to resign him.

Yao's on a rookie contract. The Rox have a team option to extend it I think.

Yao's on a three year contract, the Rox have a team option in the 4th year, then Yao becomes a restricted Free Agent, meaning that the Rox can keep Yao if they are able to match whatever else is offered.

For instance, say the Nuggets have tons of caproom, while the Rox are over the cap, if the Nuggets offer a large enough amount of money, and Yao accepts it, the Rox won't be able to match it, but if nobody else is under the cap, the Rox can match any other offer and Yao is forced to sign with the Rox.

"plus there is also the fact that he wanted to be a rocket before we won his rights"

Funny how everyone outside of "God told me not to play in Canada" Francis says that.
