http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/18865627/report-nets-f-gerald-wallace-to-optout So, the Nets just traded a likely 6th-ish pick with only top 3 protection for a half-season rental of Gerald Wallace. Congratulations! Mathematically, they have a roughly a 25% chance of having a top 3 pick, thus a 75% chance of losing the pick. [Also, to those of us who said he wouldn't be giving up 1 year worth of salary to pursue a long-term deal: SUCK IT! I TOLD YOU SO! ]
Said he was doing this in Portland, wants a long term deal for stability. Wonder what he will command on the market...
The Nets really jumped the gun on that trade. When they lost out on being able to trade for Dwight Howard, they overreacted and traded for solid, yet unspectacular piece in an attempt to keep Deron Williams happy. I think Gerald Wallace will command a decent amount from teams that are a piece away from contending. Teams like the the Lakers, Clippers, or even the Mavs could use a player like Wallace. At the age of 29, Wallace isn't getting any better and he's probably approaching his last big contract and you can expect him to sign with a contender.
The stupid part about this to me is that the Nets probably could have just signed Wallace in the offseason with their cap room if they wanted.
Wallace: I'd Like To Stay With Nets by Net Income on Apr 27, 2012 http://www.netsdaily.com/2012/4/27/2982437/wallace-id-like-to-stay-with-nets In comments to the media Friday, Gerald Wallace said he'd like to stay with the Nets, who have "great pieces" and that he feels good about the potential of the team if players are healthy as well as the potential of Brooklyn. But Wallace said he's likely to opt out of his $9.5 million contract in hopes of getting a a four- or five-year contract that offers stability and place to call home. He turns 30 this summer. Ben Couch reports that Wallace, who is from rural Alabama and only played in small markets, joked that he’s only been to New York City twice, on doctor’s appointments, but would like to stay with the Nets with their "great pieces" when healthy. He also senses the excitement Brooklyn can bring. "I was a part of Charlotte when (the expansion Bobcats) first got started," Wallace said. "Just the buzz and the atmosphere from the community around that was amazing, Brooklyn has never had a team. I can just imagine how excited and all of the buzz that’s going to be around that situation." •Season Complete, NETS' Attention Turns to Brooklyn - Ben Couch - Nets Basketball •Nets’ Brooklyn Lineup Is Full of Uncertainty - Jake Appleman - New York Times
This is the part that truly baffles me. Unless they somehow feel that playing with Wallace for 2 months somehow would make DWill more likely to stay there? I would've thought a lottery pick plus Wallace in FA would be more enticing. Anyway, the Nets better hope like hell they get Anthony Davis. I don't think DWill stays in any other situation. Ironically, they may have screwed themselves a few lottery balls by trading for Wallace in this regards.
It's head-scratcher until you realize who is running the organization; the one and only, Billy King. He really left the 76ers in shambles and the organization is probably fifty times better without him.
Because NJ wouldn't have done it? Lowry plays the same position as Deron Williams and both Lowry and Martin were out with injuries at the trade deadline. NJ was looking for immediate reinforcements at the SF position.
Because there was fools on this board who didn't even want to trade Lowry for Deron Williams and the Rocket (scientist) brass probably thought the same thing.
