**** yeah they do, they were one of the first of a series european explorers/colonizers to travel west in order to find sea routes to asia as the ottomans would not allow them to trade through there territory(probably because of strained muslim/christian relations, the ethnic cleansing of the spanish inquisition can be considered one small example of that fued)

Mexico was the first of mainland america to be conquered by the europeans, the results were similiar to the spanish conquest of the carribean: filled with death by mass pandemic disease. The once great aztec empire with its once populace capital comparable to the size of paris at that time: tenochititlan (outside of modern day mexico city) was virtually wiped out by disease after two years of contact with the spanish.

after this, a long brutal history of enslavement by the spanishof the native population ensued. The natives were worked literally to death in many cases, the spanish did not yet know how to properly manage their new slave population. They worked them mainly in silver mines, and bs gold expeditions.

the interesting thing about mexican culture is that it has indian and european influence. The spanish christianized many of the remaining population who didnt die from disease, some still kept their native culture. There are still a number of native amercans in mexico today who are not european, catholic and retain their traditions.

Getting to your question, before the mexican revolution of 1810 that was a social uprising that ousted the spanish controlled government there were different social classes within mexico. In order from highest to lowest social class: The full blooded spaniards BORN in spain, the full blooded spaniards born in mexico, those of spanish and indian mix (mestizos)full blooded native americans and africans or those of mix with african blood(mulattos).

Both of the full blooded spanish classes had the top roles in the colonial government, but those born in spain had higher status simply because of their place of birth in spain. This inequality fuelled bad blood between the two, resulting in a split of alliance between the owning class. when popular uprisings from the native population against the spanish colonial government began, those spanish born in mexico sided with the native population against those born in spain because of the inequality that had existed. It was not that the spaniards born in mexico liked the rest of the population below them, its just that they didnt want to share power and have a glass ceiling over their head.

After the revolution in 1810 with the ousting of spanish colonial rule, those spaniards in mexico still maintained their social class and possibly gained more control. They exploited those of lower social classes, and worked them on their large "haciendas" or ranches. This peasant class was much like the serfs in germany or russia, or the yeoman in england.

still today there is much racism within mexico, and these social classes are still somewhat recognized. The color of skin is still very important in mexico.

anyways, there is my rant for the day...

    Just a question seabrookmagilla.

Did u grow up in seabrook/Kemah area? I grew up in clear lake just curious because of your name tag.

As you were saying racism is still very bad in Mexico and the color of your skins matters a lot along with the color of your eyes.

I spent some time in Spain, having been there a few times over the years, and I think there is an element of truth there. It's painted wih too broad a brush, but I got a similar impression from some of the Spaniards I got to know. This discussion probably shouldn't be in this forum, though, if this part of it continues, so that's all I have to say on the subject.

The article said to look over the "casual prejudice" in Rubio's statement.

Why should it be overlooked? It certainly wouldn't be overlooked or labeled "casual prejudice" had it been about another race.

Casual. Prejudice. Never heard of this term and it sounds ridiculous, like they wanted to whitewash Rubio's words to be less offensive.

Yeah ive lived there about a decade.

and just to clarify, there is racism everywhere in this world and i think its mainly ignorance. There is racism and a proud sense of nationalism that some people make them superior to others.

My buddy commented to me earlier, saying he is just a basketball player why should we care? While i agree, and im not the one to follow celebrities but an interesting point to be made was somewhere up there. What if the word mexican wold have been replaced with black? Would it have caught more attention?

while i think blacks in this country generally are discriminated upon more than many other ethnic groups in this country. I still think that there has always been a fake sense of buddy buddy, between white and black in mass media. Kinda like saying its ok, "the era of racism is over we can get along, see we play football and basketball together. we put you in all of our billboards, commercials and movies..." IMO its kinda they do this not because white and black relations are fantastic but they have a quota to meet.

what im really getting at is that people are more sensitive to black racism in MASS MEDIA because it is less socially acceptable since the civil rights era. Itskinda like a fake alliance between whites and blacks, and the browns and asians arent in this club. it is easier to say or show something offensive about a smaller minority group or in the case of mexicans, one that has made the word "mexican" a politcal topic.

This kinda racism is hard to spot, because you have to pay attention and read between the lines. Im brown, and i am very aware of racism that goes to any ethnicity. Just yesterday i was talking to this brown guy about jordan hill and his performance against OKC the other day, and he was like," i always hated jordan hill, i always he was like you know...the n word... Because have you seen the cars he drives??" other people around me giggled and i was just like ehrm....

but anyways i ranted again sorry. G2g
