outside of mariah and christina, how are any of them desperately trying to stay relevant? lady gaga's about as famous as you can be, forbes has britney making $100M in the last 2 years, and if beyonce and katy perry aren't famous and relevant then not many are. i don't really get the whole point of the alter-ego thing but it seems to just be a stupid side thing to try out more than a great way to stay popular.

It's more in the sense of an egocentric thing of "staying fresh", I didn't say they weren't popular enough. I simply implied it's a great way to keep them interesting.

I would have thought it started out as a hotel or travel pseudonym, then maybe they tried to re-brand themselves to stay fresh or experiment creatively. The only exceptions would be Mariah and Britney, both of whom I think are dumber than particle board and would refer to themselves by different names, like, in conversations with relatives and close friends; because they think it's funny or interesting. I don't know what kind of drugs I'm supposed to take to find Nicky Minaj sexy.

Michael Jackson BECAME the alter ego white man, that just kept his same name.

Though yes most the artists just simply expand their talents into other areas and rebrand their image without needing the alter ego. Johnny Cash won awards in SEVERAL genres just being Johnny Cash. He didnt need to turn into an industrialized techno-emo pseudo identity to cover "Hurt". (But then, not everyone is Johnny Cash and James Brown, so it might require a gimmick for others of lesser talent.)

Still dont know why artists of COMPARITIVE FAME to Tina Turner feel the need to do all that, but I guess thats their version of taking the "next" step.

Mariah Carey was the first female pop artists if not the first that reversed my adoration of them into being cynical about them based on their TRUE selves. The more I found out about her the more I was like "ugh, this isnt quite the little "Vision of Love" girl isnt it."

Marrying Tommy Mottola was an obvious reason for skepticism. But all her annoying quirks past that is what really did it. Then the rise of all that 90s "diva" thing, and Whitney and a host of others with her was just a bloody mess.
