Has anybody seen this movie? I saw it this past weekend when I was in LA. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. And suprisingly...there was little to no foul language or anything else really objectionable. I'd have to say that this was my favorite comedy of the last 4 or 5 years. An enthusiastic thumbs up!!!!!
My folks just came back from a holiday in Greece, and saw the movie on one of their plane trips. They said the whole plane was filled with laughing Greeks, it was one of the funniest movies they had ever seen.
I married into a Greek family, and let me tell you that so much of that movie hits home. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. Of course, it doesn't help that the grandmother looks *exactly* like my real-life yaya-in-law
LA was fantastic!!!! I will probably go back frequently. I currently have the excuse that my bro-in-law lives out there. If he ever moves...I'll have to find a new excuse.
Yup, it was a good Ha-Ha movie. Really helps if you know some Greeks. Mighty proud people. Not much to aaargh about.
Great movie! Ironic since I'm engaged and on the verge of getting married....so it really hits home, in any ethnic culture
Saw it last night. Hilarious! I’ve been meaning to see it for a long time, but just never got around to it. It’s grossed something like 210 million so far, which puts it in the top 50 of all time, and the top grossing independent of all time, ahead of Blair Witch. My apologies in advance but I feel its my patriotic duty to point out that Nia Vardalos is a Canadian who grew up in Winnipeg, Todd MacCullough’s home town, and that the wedding that inspired the movie took place in Winnipeg, not Chicago. Much of the rest of the movie is close to being autobiographical, I’m told. There are actually lots of strongly ethnic families on the Canadian Prairies. Immigration to this area was HUGE in the last century, mostly from Europe but in later years from all parts of the globe. We tend to foster this multicultural tradition too, partially because as Canadians we say we value “Multiculturalism” which we contrast to, and like to think is superior to, the American “melting pot” ideal, (this is at least partially a myth, but I won’t get into that here). Mostly, though, we do this because it’s the reality of who we are as a region and a Country. Many prairie cities have large multicultural festivals which tend to be made up of a number of pavilions located in cultural centres or halls, spread out all over the city, and connected by a dedicated bus system for the duration of the typically 3 or 4 day festival. These pavilions have traditional music, dress, food, drink, dance, art, games, etc. They try to make them as much like visiting a festival in their native country as possible. When you’ve sampled all the food, drink, song and dance you can handle at one, you hop on one of the busses and head to the next. Winnipeg’s festival has close to 50 different cultural pavilions which receive around 400,000 total visits each year. For a city of 500,000, that’s quite a bit. So I can easily picture the real Mr. Vardalos making Folklorama in Winnipeg his passion, and his mission the introduction of the rest of Winnipeg to the spenders of Greek culture. I’m sure I had a retzina (sp?) with a guy just like him at Folkfest in Saskatoon. http://www.folklorama.ca/pavilions/pavilion.pdf Anyway, it was a good movie.
Came out on 4/19/02. In order to make this movie, it only took $5 million!! As of now, it's ranked #38 of All-Time Grossing Movies. It's made so far $213,263,148 and still going... Just think if this was a stock on Wall Street!!! Here are the release dates on VHS and DVD: Feb 11, 2003 (VHS) Feb 11, 2003 (DVD) The only disappointment about this movie was in the time it has been out, it never hit #1!!!!!!!
That movie seems like it's been at the theatres for a year. I wouldn't rule it out as an Oscar nominee because of all the buzz.
I really hope this shows Hollywood that finding good stories can be every bit as profitable as lame sequels and special effects filled crap.
It seems like low budget movies are making a little bit of a comeback. I saw "Empire" the weekend it came out, and while its FAR from a great movie, considering it only cost 3.5 million to make, I thought it was pretty good.
i'm in the same vote, eveyone has been tellking me how good it is, but have no one to go with either guess i'll have to wait till it comse out on video
